How to do a Sneak Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, Sneak Attacks provide an enjoyable method to take a monster unawares, allowing for a sneaky amount of damage prior to the battle and even causing some mischief with a few creatures before retreating.

For those who are chasing after every accomplishment, you’ll inevitably find yourself performing a Stealth Takedown at some point, as this action unlocks the Hunter-Assassin achievement. Few realize that such an attack is even available within the game, let alone understand how to execute it effectively. So, let’s delve into the details of how it functions.

Hunter-Assassin achievement guide: How to perform your first successful Sneak Attack

To launch a Sneak Attack, here’s an easy-to-follow method: Move stealthily towards a monster you haven’t engaged in battle yet, making sure to do so from behind and in a crouching position. Continue approaching until a prompt appears on the monster, instructing you to press a button. On PlayStation, that button is typically the ‘circle’ button.

After that, your character will move forward to strike the beast, only then can the accomplishment be unlocked. However, if you decide to assault the beast prior to the instruction, the Sneak Attack won’t succeed, forcing you to retreat and find another monster to engage with instead.

Should you be concerned about startling a monster or prefer dealing with less delicate beings, consider donning the Camouflage Garment for a stealthier approach. This gear will minimize noise, allowing you a closer proximity to monsters for a successful assault, offering greater flexibility in your maneuvers.

Not all creatures qualify for a Sneak Attack, as many are perpetually agitated or simply too large for this option to be applicable. If you wish to utilize this skill swiftly, seek out smaller, less aggressive creatures dwelling in the Plains or Forests. These creatures can serve as a trial run before employing it against more formidable adversaries.

Apart from inflicting significant damage during your initial surprise attack, which rewards you with an achievement, it’s advantageous to attempt this maneuver whenever you encounter a monster for the first time. This tactic provides a nice bonus damage at the start of the fight, allowing you to initiate the battle more effectively.

Are Sneak Attacks worth it?

Instead of opting for surprise strikes (Sneak Attacks), it’s often more beneficial in the long run to charge straight into a battle and aim to get atop the enemy, known as mounting. This approach not only allows for inflicting substantial damage but also creating openings for swift follow-up attacks and utilizing various items effectively. In other words, mounting offers a more satisfying outcome than a Sneak Attack.

We employed the Sneak Attack tactic just one time while earning that achievement, and since then, we’ve never gone back to it. It seems unlikely that many other players will revisit it either, unless perhaps someone discovers a remarkable construction plan and approach that’s simply irresistible not to utilize.
