As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of frustration when a game I’m eagerly anticipating turns out to be more bug-ridden than a swarm of digital locusts. Such was the case with Risk of Rain 2: Seeker of the Storm, which promised excitement but delivered more bugs than content.
The much-anticipated release of “Risk of Rain 2: Storm Chaser” faced a wave of criticism from fans due to several issues. While some felt let down by the less-than-expected content, the main source of discontent was the abundance of bugs and technical problems within the game. From Xbox players being unable to access the game altogether, to the final boss becoming nearly invulnerable under specific conditions, these glitches were ubiquitous.
The worst part was that, even if you didn’t buy the Seeker of the Storm DLC, you’d still have to deal with these bugs. Even players who wanted nothing more than to play their favorite game were unable to properly enjoy the experience. Fortunately, there is a somewhat easy solution to all of these issues: Downpatching.
How to Downpatch in Risk of Rain 2
There are a few different methods of downpatching. The simplest, and most secure method is using the Steam console. Here’s what you need to do to downpatch Risk of Rain 2 to an older version:
- Copy and paste steam://nav/console into your browser. It will prompt you to open the Seam app. Open the app to launch the Steam console.
- Paste the following code into the console bar when it’s open:
download_depot 632360 632361 9058106608706845920
- The console will start downloading the depot. Don’t close the console window while the download is ongoing. You won’t be able to see any progress bar, but the download is about 1.7 GB, so expect to wait an appropriate amount of time depending on your internet connection.
- After the download is completed, the console will let you know, mentioning the location of the downloaded files as well. Copy the file directory, and open it in your file explorer.
- Open up the RoR2 file directory from Steam. Go to your library and right click Risk of Rain 2.
- Click Properties, and open the Updates tab. Change the update status to “Only update this game when I launch it.” This will ensure that Steam doesn’t update your older version.
- Then, navigate to Installed Files, and click on “Browse…” which will be in front of “Size of Installation.” This will open the installation folder for your game.
- Copy the contents of the downloaded depot files, and paste them into the Risk of Rain 2 file directory.
How to Download Any Version of Risk of Rain 2

- Find the specific ManifestID of the version you’re looking to download by comparing the dates on SteamDB to the version changes in the wiki.
To get older the Manifest IDs, you’ll need to log in to Steam.
