In challenging online games like those in the ‘souls-like’ genre, gestures let players communicate with each other without words, showing things like gratitude or enthusiasm during difficult moments. The Nioh series has always included a popular gesture system for interacting with other players and the game world, and Nioh 3 expands on this, giving players plenty of ways to express themselves as they explore its perilous landscapes.
As a Nioh 3 player, let me tell you, knowing how to use emotes is a huge deal. Whether I’m celebrating finally taking down a tough boss, or just saying hi to another player I run into, emotes are essential for getting the full experience.
How to Emote in Nioh 3
The game lets you express your character’s emotions relatively early on, and even includes a brief tutorial to show you how when you first start playing. However, many players tend to forget about this feature after they’ve played for a few hours.
To show an emote, hold down R1/RB on your controller and press the Options/Start button. This will bring up a menu of available gestures, and you can switch between different pages to see more. If you’re using a keyboard, press G to open the gesture menu, then press Space to select the emote you want.

To discover new gestures and use them throughout the game—beyond just when playing with others—you’ll have to open chests. Some chests contain mimics that will transform into a copy of your character.
After it motions towards you, you can fight it using any combat style. But, you can also avoid a fight altogether by copying its gesture.
As a fan, I’ve learned you really can’t hesitate when facing this mimic! If you take too long, it gets impatient and will start attacking, so you’ve gotta be quick!
After you either beat the mimic in battle or successfully appease it with gestures, it will disappear. You’ll receive some valuable items, and there’s a chance you’ll also learn a new gesture to add to your repertoire.
