Okay, I’m still holding out hope for the Beastmaster job, but I’m SO excited Variant Dungeons are back in Final Fantasy XIV! After a long wait, the 7.45 update with Dawntrail has brought them back with ‘The Merchant’s Tale,’ and it looks amazing. This one’s really colorful and seems to have a ton of different paths you can take, plus a lot of backstory to dig into. And naturally, there’s a bunch of cool rewards – mounts, outfits, and even more Triple Triad cards to collect! I can’t wait to jump in.
Want to try the new The Merchant’s Tale Variant Dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV? Here’s a guide on how to unlock it, join the queue, and what rewards you can earn. Also, remember to check out this year’s Little Ladies Day event while it’s happening!
How to Unlock The Merchant’s Tale Variant Dungeon in Final Fantasy 14

The Merchant’s Tale is the newest Variant Dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV, added with Patch 7.45. It’s also the first to feature a completely redesigned system for how these dungeons will function in the future.
To begin The Merchant’s Tale Variant Dungeon, go to Old Sharlayan. First, you’ll need to finish the Level 90 Main Scenario Quest from the ‘Endwalker’ expansion. Then, find Osmon in Old Sharlayan at coordinates (X:11.9, Y:13.3) to start the questline.
Fast travel to the main aetheryte in Old Sharlayan, then head south down the stairs to the Peristyle (X:12.0, Y:13.3) and talk to Shallow Moor. This will start the Level 90 quest ‘A Spellbinding Read’, and a cutscene will play introducing Y’nazqha – Y’shtola’s younger sister.
Once you’ve met her, go back to her place at Journey’s End on the east side of town. Talk to her to trigger a new scene where her assistant shows you the book that will take you into the world of The Merchant’s Tale. You’ll then be teleported to the home of the Fair Maiden, a character from the tale.
Once you’ve watched the cutscene and quickly checked out the room, the new Variant Dungeon will become available. You can start a queue for it right there in the Fair Maiden’s room, or if you prefer, you can teleport back to Old Sharlayan using the blue symbol near Y’nazqha and queue for the dungeon from there.
How to Enter The Merchant’s Tale Variant Dungeon in Final Fantasy 14
To enter The Merchant’s Tale Variant Dungeon, you can either use the portal in the Fair Maiden’s room, or find it through the V&C Dungeon Finder. This finder is located under the Duty tab on your dashboard. When you open it, a menu will appear where you can choose from any unlocked Variant Dungeons. The Merchant’s Tale will be the fourth option in the list.
Here, you can also customize your two Variant Actions. These are unique abilities specifically for this dungeon and can help you in fights against enemies and bosses. Pick the ones that best suit your playstyle and how you contribute to your team.
How to Enter The Merchant’s Tale Advanced and Criterion Dungeon in Final Fantasy 14
The Merchant’s Tale Advanced Dungeon lets you battle the bosses in any order you like. You can stop after defeating just one boss, or keep going for more. The more bosses you defeat, the better your rewards will be.
Before you can enter The Merchant’s Tale Advanced Dungeon, you’ll need to fulfill these requirements:
- Complete the quest ‘A Spellbinding Read’ (done after completing the Variant Dungeon at least once)
- Level 100 combat role required (760 minimum ilvl)
- Defeat the three unique bosses at the end of all different routes in the Variant Dungeon
Okay, so once I’ve done everything needed for this quest, I need to find Memolivia. She’s an NPC located at coordinates (X:11.9, Y:13.3), and she’s standing close to Osmon. If I talk to her, she’ll unlock The Merchant’s Tale Advanced Dungeon for me. Then, I should be able to find it in the V&C Dungeon Finder under the ‘Advanced/Criterion’ tab – it’ll show up as available!

Once you finish the Advanced Dungeon, you’ll unlock access to The Merchant’s Tale Criterion Dungeon, which is the hardest version of the three. Like the others, it’s a boss rush, but this one requires you to defeat all three bosses one after another, and the fights are even more challenging.
Okay, so to get into the Criterion Dungeon, you just need to find Osmon and chat with him. Once you do, the dungeon should pop up as an option in your V&C Dungeon Finder. Pretty straightforward!

But here’s the catch: you have to complete all three versions of the dungeon to unlock everything. It’s a bit of a grind, but totally worth it if you want all the goodies!
