Growlithe is a well-known Fire-type Pokémon in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Its evolved form, Arcanine, is a powerful Pokémon and a great choice for challenging the Elite Four.
Growlithe doesn’t evolve automatically; you need a special item called an evolution stone to turn it into Arcanine. This guide will show you where to find both Growlithe and the evolution stone needed for the transformation.

How to Get Growlithe in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

In Pokemon FireRed, Growlithe can be found on Routes 7 and 8, and inside the Pokemon Mansion.
Growlithe is only available in the Pokemon FireRed game. You won’t find it appearing in the wild in Pokemon LeafGreen. Vulpix fills the same role as the version-exclusive Pokemon in LeafGreen.
Route 7, 8

| Pokemon | Location | Level | Encounter Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growlithe | Route 8 | Lv. 15-18 | 20% |
| Route 7 | Lv. 18-20 | 10% |
Route 8 is located between Lavender Town to the east and Saffron City to the west. You’ll likely reach it first by traveling from Lavender Town, going through the Rock Tunnel and then Route 10. Route 7 is west of Saffron City and east of Celadon City; you can access it by using the Underground Path at the end of Route 8.
It is better to get Growlithe from Route 7, as you’ll be able to catch a higher level one there.
Pokemon Mansion
| Pokemon | Location | Level | Encounter Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growlithe | Pokemon Mansion | Lv. 30-32 | 15% |
You can find the Pokemon Mansion on Cinnabar Island, which is south of Pallet Town. To get there, use the HM03 Surf move to travel south across the water from Pallet Town. Keep going until you reach the large island, and you’ll find the Mansion as the big building to the west of the Gym.
How to Evolve Growlithe into Arcanine in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Growlithe evolves into Arcanine when you use a Fire Stone. You can buy a Fire Stone at the Celadon Department Store on the 4th floor for 2,100 Poke Dollars. You’ll naturally pass through Celadon City while traveling on Route 8 and Route 7, using the Underground Path.
In Celadon City, you can get a free Eevee. If you use a Fire Stone on it, Eevee will evolve into Flareon.
In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Arcanine only learns the move Extreme Speed by leveling up—and it learns it quite late, at level 49. If you want Arcanine to learn any other moves, you’ll need to visit the Move Relearner on Two Island in the Sevii Islands, or use Technical Machines (TMs).
