Mega Evolution, a fan-favorite feature returning in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, lets certain Pokemon temporarily transform into even more powerful forms with enhanced moves. This system originally appeared in *X+Y*. After the temporary boost ends, the Pokemon will revert back to its standard form.
In *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, evolving a Pokemon into its Mega Evolution form requires two steps: obtaining a Mega Ring and giving your Pokemon its corresponding Mega Stone to hold. This guide will show you where to find the Mega Ring, how to trigger Mega Evolution, and what Mega Shards are used for.
How to Get the Mega Ring in Pokemon Legends Z-A
You’ll unlock the Mega Ring by playing through the main story until you get to Main Mission 9, “Chase The Mysterious Pokemon.” This mission begins automatically once you reach Rank V – just look for Zygarde appearing outside Hotel Z. Follow Zygarde, and a cutscene will teleport you to the roof.

You’re about to see an Absol undergoing a Rogue Mega Evolution. Mega Evolutions usually happen when a Pokémon and its Trainer connect, but recently, Lumiose City has been experiencing cases of wild Pokémon Mega Evolving on their own, without a Trainer’s help.

Okay, so get this – AZ is going to show up and let me borrow his Lucario *and* his Mega Ring! If I can win the battle and finish Mission 9, I actually get to *keep* the Mega Ring, which means I can use Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends Z-A! And the best part? Absol will join my team too! I’m so excited to finally Mega Evolve my Pokemon and have Absol by my side!
How to Evolve Mega Pokemon in Legends Z-A

Once you finish Mission 9, Mission 10 – “The Secrets of Mega Evolution” – will begin as soon as you go back to Hotel Z. This mission will teach you how Mega Evolutions function in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*.
Okay, so not every Pokémon can Mega Evolve, and if one *can*, you need to have its specific Mega Stone equipped for it to happen. It’s not like a universal thing – each Pokémon that gets a Mega Evolution needs its own special stone.
You’ll receive the Absolite when Absol becomes a member of your team, but you’ll need to manually equip it. During the early part of Mission 10, Taunie or Urbain will battle you and show you how to give a Pokémon an item to hold. Use this opportunity to give Absol the Absolite before the battle begins.
If your Pokémon is holding its Mega Stone, it can Mega Evolve during battle. A gauge will fill up as the battle goes on, and when it’s full, press the right analog stick down (R↓) to temporarily Mega Evolve your Pokémon.

When your Pokémon Mega Evolves, it transforms into a stronger form with improved moves, making it much tougher to beat. However, this powerful state is temporary. Once the meter depletes, your Pokémon will return to its original form. You can build up the meter again to Mega Evolve your Pokémon in *Pokémon Legends Z-A*.
What Are Mega Shards Used For?

In *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, Mega Shards and Mega Stones aren’t quite what you’d expect – even though their names sound alike. Mega Stones are held by Pokémon to allow them to Mega Evolve, but Mega Shards are actually used as money to *buy* those Mega Stones.

Once you finish Mission 10, ‘The Secrets of Mega Evolution,’ you can use Mega Shards at Quasartico Inc. to buy Mega Stones and XP Candy.

To get Mega Stones from the special vendor, you’ll need to beat the CEO. While there aren’t a lot of Stones available right away, you’ll find more as you play through the story in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*.
