How to Evolve Onix into Steelix in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Onix is a well-loved Rock-type Pokémon featured in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. If you want to obtain and evolve Onix into the powerful Steelix, you’ll need to progress far into the game and battle the toughest trainers in Lumiose City.

This guide explains how to find Onix and the Metal Coat, which is used to evolve it into Steelix. It also shows you where to get Steelixite, the Mega Stone needed to fully Mega Evolve your Steelix.

How to Get Onix in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Onix can be found in the Wild Zone 14 during the daytime, but it’s a bit tricky to find. Players need to search for holes in the ground where it hides. Be warned – Roggenrola also live in these holes and will attack if you get too close!

Okay, so Wild Zone 14 unlocks after you finish Main Story Mission 20. That means you’ll be pretty far into the game before you can even think about catching an Onix and adding it to your team. It’s definitely a mid-game challenge!

How to Get Metal Coat & Evolve Onix in Pokemon Legends Z-A

To evolve Onix, you’ll need a Metal Coat. It’s one of two Pokémon that require this item (along with Scyther). Specifically, you’ll need to reach Main Mission 35 and then finish either Side Mission 101, called ‘Steadfast as Steel,’ or Side Mission 114, ‘A Feather from Skarmory,’ to evolve Onix into Steelix.

As you might expect, completing either of these Missions will reward you with a Metal Coat. However, both are designed for later in the game, so you’ll need to make significant progress in the Main Story before you can earn one.

Mega Steelix

After you get the Metal Coat, you can evolve Onix into Steelix by simply equipping the item to Onix and following the necessary steps.

  1. Open the party menu by pressing (X)
  2. Select Link Trade
  3. Enter code 0197-0197 for an Onix trade.
  4. Once the other Onix arrives, its evolution icon will be lit up.
  5. Select Onix in the menu and then ‘Evolve.’

Just a reminder that you need to manually start every evolution in the game, even if it usually happens through trading or other specific actions.

To get Mega Steelix, you need an item called Steelixite. You can purchase it at the Stone Emporium on Verte Main Street.

Mega Steelix is a very durable Pokémon, able to withstand a lot of damage that would easily defeat others. To maximize its toughness in Pokémon Legends Z-A, it’s best to focus its training (EVs) on its HP, Defense, and Special Defense – specifically, 252 points in HP, 4 in Defense, and 252 in Special Defense.

Because abilities aren’t used in Pokemon Legends Z-A, Mega Steelix can’t benefit from its Sand Force ability. When building Steelix, keep this in mind. If you want to maximize its attacking power, a good build would be 252 HP, 4 Defense, and 252 Attack.
