Spearow is a fast-flying Pokémon that players can find early in the Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen games. This Pokémon, nicknamed the Tiny Bird Pokémon, was one of the original 150 Pokémon introduced in Generation 1 and is skilled in using Normal, Flying, Dark, and Psychic-type moves.
Spearow evolves only once, becoming Fearow when it gains a level. This guide for Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen details where to find Spearow in the Kanto region and the Sevii Islands, and explains how to evolve it into its final form, Fearow.
How to Get Spearow in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, you can find Spearow in many places throughout the Kanto region. It appears most often on Routes 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 22, and 23, though how frequently you encounter it and its level will vary depending on the specific route.
You can find the Tiny Bird Pokémon on the Sevii Islands at several locations: Treasure Beach, Kindle Road, Cape Brink, Water Path, Ruin Valley, Canyon Entrance, and Mt. Ember. They appear less often than before, but they’ll be at higher levels this time around.
Capture Spearow at Kanto Routes

| Spearow Spawn Locations | Terrain | Encounter Rate | Pokemon Levels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 3 | Grass | 35% | Level 6 and 8 |
| Route 4 | Level 8, 10, and 12 | ||
| Route 9 | Level 13, 16, and 17 | ||
| Route 10 | |||
| Route 11 | Level 13, 15, and 17 | ||
| Route 16 | 30% | Level 20 and 22 | |
| Route 17 | |||
| Route 18 | |||
| Route 22 | 10% | Level 3 and 5 | |
| Route 23 | 15% | Level 32 and 34 |
Okay, so if you want to snag a Spearow early on in your game, you’ll want to head to Routes 3 and 4. Route 3 is just northwest of Kanto and east of Pewter City, and Route 4 is further north, connecting to Route 3. It actually goes through Mt. Moon and eventually leads you to Cerulean City. Once you’re there, just run around in the grass – you’ll want to find a Spearow that’s Level 6 or higher to catch it!
If players want to acquire a much higher-level Spearow, travel to Routes 9, 10, and 11.
Acquire Spearow at Sevii Islands

| Spearow Spawn Locations | Terrain | Encounter Rate | Pokemon Levels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treasure Beach | Grass | 30% | Level 31 and 32 |
| Kindle Road | 25% | Level 30 and 32 | |
| Cape Brink | 20% | Level 31 | |
| Water Path | Level 44 | ||
| Ruin Valley | |||
| Canyon Entrance | |||
| Mt. Ember | 15% | Level 30 and 32 |
You can still find Spearow even later in the game, specifically on the Sevii Islands. The best places to encounter this Tiny Bird Pokémon are Treasure Beach and Kindle Road, both located on One Island. To reach these areas, you’ll need a Water-type Pokémon that knows the Surf move to travel across the water.
By Level 31, Spearow can learn moves like Pursuit, Aerial Ace, and Mirror Move. You can also find a Spearow at Level 44 that already knows Drill Peck.
How to Evolve Spearow into Fearow in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen
Raise Spearow’s level to 20
Spearow evolves into its final form, Fearow, at level 20. You can level up your Spearow by battling wild Pokémon in the Kanto and Sevii Islands, or by using a Rare Candy.
Okay, so if you want to get your Spearow stronger fast, battling Bug or Grass-type Pokémon trainers – like the Bug Catcher – is the way to go. And honestly, if you’re facing Erika at the Celadon Gym, Spearow or even a fully evolved Fearow can be super effective against her Pokémon!
When preparing Spearow before it evolves, teaching it moves like Peck, Leer, Fury Attack, and Pursuit can help it level up quickly in the Kanto region.
You can also help your Spearow level up quickly using methods like Switch Training, leaving it at the Day Care, or using Exp. Share. With Switch Training, simply start a battle with Spearow, then immediately switch it out for another Pokémon on your team. If you win the battle, Spearow will still gain some experience points.
Day Care allows your Spearow to gain experience passively by leaving it with the Day Care man on Route 5. Exp. Share is a held item that gives your Pokémon 50% of the experience earned in battle while it’s in your party. To get Exp. Share, you need to catch 50 different Pokémon species and talk to the assistant at Professor Oak’s lab before challenging the Fuchsia City Gym Leader, Koga.
