How to Farm Familiarity in Nioh 3

Nioh 3 is a challenging game that builds on the ‘Souls-like’ formula. It features a demanding combat system with intricate combos, and its equipment system is more involved, similar to action role-playing games like Diablo. Every weapon has various customizable stats, but they all share one key feature: the Familiarity system, which affects how effective they are.

Honestly, Weapon Familiarity is something I used to totally ignore, but it’s actually a really useful game mechanic that everyone should be using. Let me explain how it works and why it can give you an edge.

What Does Weapon Familiarity Do in Nioh 3?

  1. Increases the stats and damage dealt by your weapons
  2. Unlocks Crucible Arts (if any)

As I play, I’ve noticed the more I use a weapon, the better my character gets with it – I start doing more damage! And here’s a cool thing: if I really master a weapon that has a special Crucible Art, I unlock that skill and can use it even when I switch to other weapons of the same type. It’s awesome to build up that familiarity and have those skills always available!

Fully upgrading a weapon’s Familiarity keeps it useful for longer, allowing it to stay competitive with newer, more powerful equipment. While better items will eventually become available, you can use the Eternal Rift Blacksmith’s Soul Match service to upgrade your weapon’s level. Importantly, it will keep the Familiarity you’ve built up, giving it an advantage over other gear.

How to Increase Familiarity in Nioh 3

Unlike Amrita, you don’t have to beat enemies to increase your Familiarity. Simply dealing damage with your weapon is enough. If you want to quickly max out your Familiarity with a particular enemy, just keep fighting them until you’re happy with the result.

The most effective way to do this is when fighting bosses, especially those you can repeatedly challenge, such as Jakotsu-Baba. If you’ve already defeated a quest boss, you can fight them again by going to any Shrine and choosing ‘Battle Scroll’. Select the mission you want to replay and return to the boss arena. Instead of finishing the fight, damage the boss until almost defeated, then intentionally let them defeat you to reset the encounter.

Okay, so I figured out something cool! Once I completely max out a weapon’s Familiarity and it has a Crucible Art, that Art actually shows up in the Martial Arts/Ninjutsu customization menu. It’s awesome being able to equip it after all that grinding!
