In the game Xenoblade Chronicles X, as you engage in battles together with your team or select appropriate dialogue responses, you will strengthen your bonds with your companions.
As the level of affinity increases, more intimate interactions between characters will emerge throughout New Lands Arena (NLA), enabling you to deepen relationships and discover fresh Affinity Quests.
Instead, from level 2 onwards, the game demands that you own a pet for certain interactions, but it doesn’t instruct you on how to acquire one.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the process of where to locate a pet in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, helping you to earn your party members’ affection.
Accept the Nine Lives Affinity Mission

In order to acquire a pet, you need to accomplish the Nine Lives Affinity Mission. Here are the prerequisites for starting this mission:
1. Reach a certain level or status in the game.
2. Progress through the main storyline up to a specific point.
- Complete Chapter 5
- Be at level 20
As someone who’s battled their way through the grueling Chapter 5, I bet you’ve climbed up to level 20 or beyond! You’ve got this under control and can proceed with confidence.
You can locate the Non-Player Character distributing the quest just north of the Business District. If fast travel is available for you, use it, or if you don’t have a waypoint yet, speak with a Transport Pilot in any district to help you reach the destination.
Approach Matthias, who serves as a Mediator for BLADE. He will clarify that Aisha, one of NLA’s beloved feline residents, is currently unaccounted for. He kindly requests your assistance in gathering any relevant information.
How to Complete Nine Lives

In Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, you’ll find plenty of guidance markers. Once you accept a mission, opt to follow its progress, then hit ‘L + Y’ to view your map and locate your destination.
Aisha was most recently spotted in the Lower Administrative District. If you’ve got Fast Travel enabled at the Hangar, make your way there. If not, navigate towards Armory Alley and simply leap down. Utilize the Follow Ball when necessary.
The exact mission location won’t show on the map—only a radius where you can gather information.
You need to make your way to the western part of the hangar, close to where Doug usually hangs out. There, you’ll spot an NPC named Conner who will have a distinct yellow chat icon above his head. When you talk to him, he’ll give you the clue you require.
After that, quickly make your way to locate Matthias in the Industrial District. However, since the non-violent BLADE suggests going directly to Cliffside Beach, a region teeming with monsters, let’s do the same.

Just as anticipated, Matthias swiftly summons a formidable Level 20 Grex. At this point in our adventure, managing such a beast is relatively straightforward, so let’s tame it accordingly.
Following the slaying of the beast, Matthias locates Aisha once more, yet she swiftly flees once more. Converse with Matthias, and he’ll concoct a lure made from food to entice Aisha back, inadvertently summoning another monster as well.
This round, we’re dealing with a Level 21 Forfex. Eliminate it appropriately. After that, quick-travel back to NLA’s Administrative District to locate Matthias and Aisha in tandem, and finish the mission.
The rewards for completing Nine Lives are:
- 220 Experience
- 13,000 Money
- x1 Abyssinian (a cat!)
- Learn Ultraslash, a Longsword Art
Currently, heading over to the BLADE Barracks will grant you access to the Customization Center console where you’ll discover an exciting new feature: Pet customization! As of now, the elegant Abyssinian cat is the sole option available for your pet companion.
How to Get New Pets in Xenoblade Chronicles X

In order to acquire additional pets, you should be open to completing fundamental tasks associated with them. For instance, a task labeled as “Search Request” could show up following the completion of the mission titled “Nine Lives”.
Just like other Basic Missions, a Search Request may appear at random. If it doesn’t appear, simply close the interface and engage with your computer again until the mission becomes available.
How to Complete the Search Request Basic Mission

To find a missing dog belonging to an NPC, you’ll want to head over to the Biahno River. If you’ve already unlocked FN Site 103 for quick travel, that would be your best option. But if not, you can easily reach the area by traveling to either FN Sites 101 or 105 instead.
To locate it, keep following the ball. Over time, you’ll discover a Labrador perched on a rocky outcrop. Just a leap from the ground will take you there.
Engage with the puppy and your task is accomplished. The Labrador has been successfully returned to the BLADE Barracks, where you can customize it at the Customization Center on your PC. It’s funny how the mission was titled “locate my dog,” but now it seems the pet belongs to us!

It can be a little inconvenient, but whenever a sincere conversation calls for either a cat or a dog, you’ll have to make a trip to the BLADE Barracks to trade your current pets.
A total of three cats and three dogs can be found in the game, each one earned by finishing the Basic Missions. The specific breed of these pets doesn’t impact heartfelt interactions, making it a choice based on personal preference as to which adorable companion will reside in your barracks.
