Sodium Nitrate is a common resource in the game No Man’s Sky. You’ll need it to build and power important items like shields, armor, and large refiners. Where To Find Sodium Nitrate Crystals
Sodium Nitrate isn’t like some other resources in No Man’s Sky, such as Paraffinium, which you find in large underground deposits. Instead, you can find Sodium Nitrate on the surface of every planet, appearing as orange or yellow crystals.
To locate these from afar, use the scanner (C) and search for the Na+ symbol. Once found, you can mine these crystals with an Advanced Mining Laser. Switch to the laser using G to cycle through your Multi-Tool’s tools, then hold down the left mouse button (LMB) to begin mining.
You’ll find plenty of Sodium, but Sodium Nitrate is harder to come by and will take some searching. Collect the Sodium anyway, because you can process it to create Sodium Nitrate.
Purchasing Sodium Nitrate
You can get Sodium Nitrate in No Man’s Sky by buying it from Galactic Trade Terminals or from captains on random ships. You’ll find the Trade Terminals on the main floor of Space Stations, right across from the big teleporter.
Each Trade Terminal offers a variety of products that change regularly. If you can’t find Sodium Nitrate at one, try visiting a different Solar System and checking its Space Station – they might have it in stock.

How To Refine Sodium Nitrate
You can make Sodium Nitrate in several ways, and Sodium is a common ingredient. If you’re just starting out with a basic Portable Refiner, you’ll probably need to combine two Sodium to create one Sodium Nitrate, because most other methods require more advanced refining equipment.
You can usually find sodium by scanning the planet’s surface with a C-scanner. Carbon, or condensed carbon, is also needed to power refiners.
