Early in Chapter 5 of Resident Evil 7, Ethan learns that Zoe has also been kidnapped, alongside Mia. To rescue them both, he must follow the commands of Lucas Baker, Jack Baker’s son. The first task is to open Lucas’s Testing Area, which requires finding a Blue Key Card and a Red Key Card hidden somewhere in the main house of Resident Evil 7.
This guide shows you exactly how to find the Red and Blue Key Cards in Resident Evil 7. It provides clear, step-by-step instructions on what to look for and where to go to solve the puzzles and obtain both key cards.
Where to Find the Blue Key Card in Resident Evil 7

In Resident Evil 7, you’ll find the Blue Key Card in the attic of the Kid’s Room, which is on the second floor of the main house. But first, you need to obtain the Snake Key and complete a shadow puzzle also located in the attic before you can grab the Blue Key Card.
Step 1 – Get the Snake Key
Once you’ve found the D-series arm in Eveline’s bedroom, head back to the trailer. You’ll get a call from Lucas who tells you to investigate the fridge. Inside, you’ll discover a disturbing clue that leads you to the Dissection Room – you may remember it from searching for the Red Dog Head in RE7. Be ready to fight several Molded creatures as you explore this area.
Ethan discovers the body of the police officer who tried to help him early in the game, in the Dissection Room. Examining the wound on his neck will give you the Snake Key. This key unlocks the snake door shortcut, which leads back towards the entrance of the Processing Area and up to the second floor of the main house. Be prepared for more Molded enemies to appear. You can use crafting recipes to create ammo or healing items if needed before you leave the Dissection Room.

Step 2 – Unlock the Attic Ladder
Go back to the second floor of the house and head to the west wing. Use the Snake Key to unlock the Kid’s Room. Inside, you’ll find notes that tell you more about Lucas and give you hints about a hidden switch. This switch is located on the desk, underneath a lamp made from an old trophy. Pressing the switch will lower a ladder to the attic. Before climbing up, don’t forget to pick up the herb in the vase to the right of the ladder.
Step 3 – Solve the Shadow Puzzle
When you enter the attic in RE7, you’ll find a cabinet directly in front of you containing the “Happy Birthday” VHS tape. Turn to your right, and you’ll see a shelf with a Toy Axe and a Model Shotgun. It’s a good idea to grab both of these items. The Toy Axe is needed to solve a puzzle in the Yard and obtain a Stabilizer, while the Model Shotgun lets you unlock the more powerful M21 Shotgun in RE7.
Don’t forget to leave space for the Blue Key Card! You’ll find it after you solve the shadow puzzle at the back of the room. When you rotate the puzzle piece to match the painting, a dollhouse on the wall will open, revealing the card. Once you have it, go back to the Main Hall and begin searching for the Red Key Card.
Where to Find the Red Key Card in Resident Evil 7

Okay, so as a Resident Evil 7 player, I figured out where the Red Key Card is! You can find it in the Workshop, which is in the Processing Area down on B1 of the main house. But heads up – you’ll need to grab the Snake Key and solve that tricky clock puzzle in the Master Bedroom first before you can actually get your hands on it.
Step 1 – Go to the Master Bedroom
Head back upstairs to the Main Hall and use the Snake Key to unlock the Master Bedroom. Once inside, you’ll find Grandma Baker sitting in her chair. Feel free to look around! You can find a herb in the top drawer of the dresser in front of her, and a lock pick inside the lockbox to her left. Don’t forget to check the closet – there’s a Treasure Photo on the stool to the left.
Step 2 – Solve the Clock Puzzle
After you’ve searched this room and made sure you have space in your inventory, examine the antique clock on the bedside table. You’ll find a note attached to the nearby globe that says “same time as all other clocks.” This is a hint that the clock needs to be set to 10:15 – with the hour hand pointing at the 10 and the minute hand at the 3. You can confirm this by looking at the grandfather clock in the Main Hall.

After setting the correct time, a bed will slide aside, uncovering a secret path to the Workshop in the Processing Area. Inside this room filled with disturbing creations, you’ll find the Red Key Card on the central work table. You can also locate improved Handgun ammo in the metal cabinet to your right as you enter.
With both the Blue and Red Key Cards in your possession, you can now go back to the locked door in the Yard. Remember to answer the phone in the Main Hall first! Once you’ve done that, use the key cards to open the door and move on to the Testing Area to continue looking for Mia and Zoe.
Be sure to watch the “Happy Birthday” VHS tape before you go into the Testing Area. It contains clues that will help you solve a puzzle later.
