How to Fish in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can go fishing as you have in past games of the series, however, there’s a twist to how it functions compared to before.

This time, I find myself immersed in an engaging mini-game within the fishing experience. It’s not merely about casting my lure at the opportune moment; instead, I must captivate the fish’s attention! The reward is satisfying as it provides me with Rations for cooking and is essential for completing specific quests.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to fish in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to Fish | Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, I stumbled upon the ability to fish once I ventured into the heart of Scarlet Forest as part of the main adventure. There, I chanced upon a lady named Kanya. After having a chat with her, she set me on a side quest titled “Fishing: Life, in Microcosm”. This little journey served as an introduction to the game’s fishing system. To my delight, Kanya even handed over a Fishing Rod as a permanent keepsake!

Alright, I’m about to gear up for some fishing action! Press L1 on my PlayStation 5, LB on my Xbox, or Ctrl key on PC to open the Item Menu. Navigate through the menu and find the Fishing Rod – it’s easy to spot with its distinct shape of a stick adorned with a fish at the end. Once I’ve got it selected, I’ll be ready to cast my line into the virtual waters!

Using your Fishing Rod, move towards any water source. Once there, press Square on PS5, X on Xbox, or E on PC to cast your line. To adjust where you’re casting, hold down L2 on PS5, LT on Xbox, or right-click on PC. A white dot indicates the aiming spot; confirm by pressing R2 on PS5, RT on Xbox, or left-click on PC.

After you throw your bait, try to catch a fish’s interest. You can do this by slightly moving your fishing line with the Left Stick (on a controller) or using WASD keys (on a PC). It seems that quickly jerking the line by bringing it closer to your hunter is quite effective, but some fish can be quite hard to catch…

Once the fish takes the bait, you’ll notice it becoming agitated and splashing about. Swiftly hit R2 (PlayStation 5), RT (Xbox), or Left Click (PC) to pull it in! Your hunter will handle the rest. You can also use this button to retrieve the lure if no fish takes the bait.

Changing Lures

As you advance in Kanya’s storyline, various kinds of Lures will become accessible to you. Initially, all you have is a Common Wood Minnow Lure, but upon finishing the “Seeking the Goldfish” quest for Kanya, new lures can be unlocked. The lure currently being used is displayed on the lower right corner of the screen, just above your Fishing Rod.

To switch up your fishing bait: Press and hold L1 (PS5) or LB (Xbox), then press Triangle/Y or X/A respectively. On PC, use the Up and Down arrow keys. This allows you to scroll through various lures you’ve already unlocked. Remember that different fish require different baits, so if you’re not getting any bites, consider switching your lure.

Here’s all you require to catch fish in Monster Hunter Wilds! It’s slightly more complex than in earlier Monster Hunter games, but once you get accustomed, it becomes quite straightforward. Be sure to practice patience as the fish can be rather obstinate when it comes to biting on your lure!
