When you start playing Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake, you’ll quickly notice some doors and chests you can’t open right away. Series veterans will likely know the reason, but newcomers—or even those who played the Dragon Quest 3 remake—might find it confusing. Just like in that game, you’ll need to find keys scattered throughout the world to unlock specific doors. However, Dragon Quest 2 Remake also has locked chests! This guide will show you how to unlock everything—all the doors and chests—and explain where to find every key in the game.
How to Unlock Doors and Chests in Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake

For Every Key, A Color:
Okay, so in Dragon Quest II Remake, you’ll run into a bunch of locked doors and chests. There are three different types, and each one needs a specific key to open. The cool thing is, each key is a different color, so you’ll have to keep track of which color unlocks what. Here’s the breakdown of the colors and their corresponding keys…
- Red Doors and Red Wood Chests: Thief’s Key
- Blue Doors and Blue Chests: Magic Key
- Silver Doors and Silver Chests: Ultimate Key
The silver chests sometimes look a little green, which can be misleading. If a chest appears silvery-green, it needs the Ultimate Key to open. You’ll find all three keys as you play through the story, but knowing when you’ll get each one can save you a lot of frustration. Otherwise, you might waste hours searching for the Ultimate Key, only to discover you won’t be able to get it until much later in the game.
Throughout the game, you’ll find three keys at fairly regular intervals. Each key unlocks many new areas and valuable items. The following sections will explain how to get each one.
How to Get the Thief’s Key in Dragon Quest 2 Remake
The Thief’s Key is the first key you’ll find, and it lets you open locked doors and chests. Specifically, it opens red doors and Red Wood Chests – these chests look different from the regular red chests you can open without a key.
Reach Moonbrooke Castle:
To get the Thief’s Key in Dragon Quest II Remake, you need to reach Moonbrooke Castle and add Princess Peronel to your team. This happens as part of the main story, after you’ve already recruited Prince Caradoc. Here’s what you need to do to recruit Peronel:
- When visiting Moonahan, notice the lost dog that follows you when spoken to.
- Reach Moonbrooke Castle near the center of the map.
- Make your way to the western edge of the castle grounds, then into the courtyard where the cutscene between Peronel and her father took place. There, you will encounter a flower that appears to have some connection to Peronel. A voice will guide you to the Swamp Shrine east of Moonbrooke.
- Collect Ra’s Mirror from the Swamp Shrine
- Return to Moonahan and interact with the lost dog.
- The dog is revealed to be Peronel.
- Once Peronel is in the party, return to Moonbrooke Castle. The Chancellor of Moonbrooke will give you the Thief’s Key after revealing himself.
How to Get the Magic Key in Dragon Quest 2 Remake
Help the Dream-Whisperer s & the Mermaid Queen:
To get the Magic Key in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, you’ll first need to reach Rippleport and get the Ship. This will unlock new places you can travel to. Here’s how to get the Magic Key:
- Collect the Star, Moon, and Sun Sigils. These are located at the Lighthouse, Dirkandor, and Burrowell/Shrine of Flames respectively.
- Once you’ve collected the first three sigils, you’ll receive a vision from the Over-Seer asking for your help. Head to the Shrine of Rain.
- Speak to the Over-Seer, who will send you to Gaggle Rock to speak with the mermaids in hopes of acquiring the Faerie Trumpet.
- Enter the Faerie Palace and defeat Belial. Obtain Lorelei’s Harp.
- Return to Gaggle Rock and speak with the mermaids.
- Head to Mermaid’s Sanctuary and face Toadalitarian.
- Once complete, you will automatically be transported back to Mersea. Once you have freedom of movement, head to the Royal Square and meet with the Mermaid Queen. At the end of the conversation, she’ll reward you with the Magic Key.
How to Get the Ultimate Key in Dragon Quest 2 Remake
Enter Rendarek:
The Ultimate Key is the last key you’ll find in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, but it won’t be available until near the end of your adventure. First, you need to gather all five sigils and then travel to Rendarek, a snowy area where the game’s final story unfolds. You can’t miss Rendarek—just follow the main story of DQ2 Remake to get there.
When you arrive in Rendarek, make sure to visit the Rendarek Shrine, located in the northeast part of town. Inside, go to the back and talk to the priest. He’ll give you the Ultimate Key after a short conversation.
Okay, so now I can finally open everything in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake! All those locked doors and chests? They’re mine to explore now. Seriously, this is a game-changer!
