Okay, so Nidoran♂ and Nidoran♀ are pretty cool Pokemon, and in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, you can evolve them into Nidoking and Nidoqueen – both are awesome to have on your team! But here’s the thing: you can’t just buy the stone you need to get them to their final forms. You’ll have to find it somewhere in the game, since no shop actually sells it.
If you want to evolve a Nidoran into a Nidoking or Nidoqueen, you’ll first need to find a Nidoran in your game. Then, you’ll also need to locate the evolution stone required to get it to its final, fully evolved form.
How to Get Nidoran in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
Nidoran♂ and Nidoran♀ can be found in three locations in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Route 3
- Underground Path (In-game trade)
- Safari Zone
Route 3
Route 3 lies east of Pewter City and has two grassy areas where you can find male and female Nidoran.
- In Pokemon FireRed, Nidoran♂ has a 14% chance to appear in Route 3, whereas Nidoran♀ only has a 1% chance.
- In Pokemon LeafGreen, Nidoran♀ has a 14% chance to appear in the grass in Route 3, while Nidoran♂ only appears 1% of the time.
Underground Path (Trade)
A girl with pink hair stands near the stairs leading to the Underground Path on Route 5, south of Cerulean City. She’ll trade you a female Nidoran for a male Nidoran in the FireRed version, or a male Nidoran for a female Nidoran in the LeafGreen version. This trade is helpful if you’re struggling to find the rarer gender of Nidoran, which only has a 1% chance of appearing on Route 3.
Safari Zone
The Safari Zone in Fuchsia City is home to both male and female Nidoran, along with their evolved forms, Nidorino and Nidorina. You can find them throughout all four areas of the zone.

How to Evolve Nidoran into Nidoking and Nidoqueen in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
How to Get Nidoking and Nidoqueen
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, both Nidoran♂ and Nidoran♀ evolve at level 16 – Nidoran♂ becomes Nidorino, and Nidoran♀ becomes Nidorina. Later, Nidorino can evolve into Nidoking, and Nidorina into Nidoqueen, by using a Moon Stone.
Moon Stones are different from other evolution stones because you can’t buy them at the Celadon Department Store. Instead, players have to find them as hidden items in Poké Balls or earn them by completing quests.
Moon Stone Locations

The following are all ways you can get Moon Stones in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Mt. Moon #1: In the northwestern corner of Mt. Moon, 1F is a Moon Stone item, right above the ladder leading down to the floor below.
- Mt. Moon #2: Just before the location where you find the Dome and Helix Fossils in Mt. Moon, turn east and interact with the protruding rock shown in the screenshot above to obtain another Moon Stone.
- Game Corner: In the Celadon City Rocket Hideout in the Game Corner, you’ll find a Moon Stone at the northwestern corner of B2F.
- Pokemon Mansion: After obtaining HM03 Surf from the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City, go to the southern edge of Pallet Town. Then, swim southward until you reach Cinnabar Island. Enter the Pokemon Mansion, and on the very first floor, look for a pile of rocks on the left. Interact with the rock in the middle to get another Moon Stone.
- Sevii Islands: After getting the Meteorite from Bill, rescue Lostelle from the Hypno. Then, talk to her father in the Game Corner on Two Island for another Moon Stone.
