Riolu and Lucario are fan favorites in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but finding a Riolu and evolving it into Lucario can be challenging. Luckily, there’s a simple side quest in Pokemon Legends: Z-A that guarantees you’ll get one.

Riolu is a very rare Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Unlike many other Pokémon, you won’t find Riolu appearing randomly in Lumiose City’s Wild Zones. While you can still catch one, it takes patience and a few attempts to get it to stay in a Poké Ball. Here’s a guide to finding Riolu in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Riolu Locations in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

You can find Riolu in two places in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. One is on the roof of the Passage Ombrage marketplace, which is in the northwest part of Lumiose City, just beyond Wild Zone 3. You’ll need to use a ladder to climb up there. Another Riolu can be found…

Riolu, like Dratini, is quite rare, so you might not find it right away. If you can’t find it in Passage Ombrage, try fast traveling away and coming back. Catching Riolu can be tricky, so use your best Poke Balls and aim for the back for the best chance of success.

You can also get a Riolu by completing the side quest “An Abra Playmate.” This quest is found in a courtyard east of Wild Zone 3 in northern Lumiose City. To complete it, you need to trade an Abra, and in return, you’ll receive a special Riolu named Riolouie. You can find Abra on rooftops in Wild Zone 1 and Wild Zone 5.

How to Evolve Riolu in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Riolu evolves into Lucario under specific conditions. You need to become very good friends with your Riolu, and then evolve it while it’s daytime.

Unlike some Pokémon evolutions, you don’t need Riolu to reach a certain level to evolve it into Lucario in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Instead, you’ll need to become good friends with it! Spend time with Riolu by relaxing with it and your other Pokémon at benches in Lumioise City, taking it to cafes, and giving it items that increase its friendship level. Once you’ve built a strong bond, an evolution icon will appear next to Riolu’s name during the day.
