How to Get Grapple Beam in Metroid Prime 4

In Metroid Prime 4, the Psychic Grapple lets Samus connect to special points in the environment, allowing her to reach higher areas and cross gaps. You’ll need to unlock the Grapple Beam to progress through the game. This guide explains how to do that, and answers any questions players might have about the Psychic Grapple in Metroid Prime 4.

The Psychic Grapple and Psychic Lasso are different abilities in the game. You get the Lasso first, and it lets you pull things towards you. The Grapple, which you unlock later, lets Samus swing across gaps using specific points.

Pre-Requisites

Once you unlock Vi-O-La IC Mode, you’ll be able to cross lava pools on Vi-O-La and attempt the Psychic Grapple. You’ll naturally unlock this ability as you progress through the game, but here’s a breakdown of how to get it:

  1. Unlock Fire Shot, and use it to enter Ice Belt.
  2. Beat Keratos at the end of Ice Belt to unlock Psychic Boost Ball.
  3. Return to Volt Forge, and navigate to Tower 3.
  4. Use Psychic Boost Ball inside the Spinner in Tower 3’s first room.

Flare Pool

Once you’ve obtained the Vi-O-La IC Suit, return to Flare Pool. You can now cross the lava pool where you previously activated the bridge and enter the facility on the other side. Inside, you’ll need to rescue a few members of the Galactic Federation before facing Phenoros in battle. Defeating Phenoros will reward you with the Psychic Grapple.

The battle against Phenoros happens in two stages. First, ride close to the boss and shoot the glowing orbs underneath it. Then, the fight changes – you’ll need to destroy the orbs on Phenoros’s head and attack its tongue to deal damage. Finally, when Phenoros falls, put on the Psychic Visor, charge up a Psychic Beam, and aim it down the boss’s throat to hit an orb inside.

Once you get the Psychic Grapple ability, keep an eye out for special points and nodes marked with a grapple icon. To connect to one, press and hold the ZL button, and let go to disconnect. You can also swing from certain grapple points using the left joystick, and you’ll need to do this to reach the next energy beam in Metroid Prime 4.
