To get Hardwood on Starsand Island, you need to chop down large trees, like Banyans, using your axe. You’ll need the upgraded Impact Axe to cut down Banyans, but luckily, there are plenty growing right near where you start the game – look for the big, dark trees around your home. If you’ve already chopped those down, you can explore the rest of the island to find more.

If you’re looking for Banyan trees to chop down, the Moonlit Forest is a good spot. However, like the trees in other areas, you’ll need the Impact Axe to cut them. You’ll automatically learn how to craft this axe by following Zerine’s main quest, ‘A Warm Glow,’ which also unlocks the ‘Warm Light’ Request. It’s a good idea to focus on the Crafting profession early in the game so you can start gathering Hardwood quickly.

It’s not allowed to cut down trees on public property that are used for beautification, like those near stores or famous buildings.

As you’ve probably noticed, Hardwood is a vital resource for crafting, just like Softwood. Because it’s harder to find than Softwood, it’s a good idea to chop down any Banyan trees you come across quickly. This will help you build up a supply of Hardwood in your storage on Starsand Island.
