As a long-time Pokémon fan, I’ve always loved how many different ways there are to evolve your Pokémon, and it looks like Pokémon Legends: Z-A is continuing that tradition! I’ve just learned that you’ll need a Metal Coat to evolve a couple of specific Pokémon in the new game, which is awesome!
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is different from the previous game, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, by reintroducing online trading. Unlike Arceus, where Pokémon evolved using items, Z-A requires trading for certain evolutions – specifically, you’ll need to trade to get Scizor and Steelix, as these Pokémon can’t be found while exploring the game world.
Want to evolve certain Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A? We’ve got the information you need to find a Metal Coat and add them to your team.
Where to Find Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Pokémon Legends: Z-A features two side quests that each reward players with a Metal Coat, allowing you to obtain this item earlier than usual.
Completing both the ‘Steadfast as Steel’ and ‘A Feather From Skarmory’ side quests will give you a Metal Coat. However, these quests become available very late in the game, and you might even need to finish the main story before ‘A Feather From Skarmory’ appears. Therefore, it’s best to prioritize completing ‘Steadfast as Steel’ first.
We’ve found that this Side Mission becomes available during Main Mission 35. The character who starts it is located on Bleu Street, in the southern part of the map, between Bleu Sector 7 and Bleu Sector 5. You can quickly reach the area by fast traveling to the nearby Pokémon Center, or by coming from Wild Zone 16 or Wild Zone 12.
Okay, so to finish this side quest, you need to battle a trainer who specializes in Steel-type Pokémon. Their team includes Excadrill, Steelix, Mawile, and Scizor. Honestly, I found that using Fire-type Pokémon was the way to go – they just melt through those Steel types really quickly and made the battle so much easier!
Where to Buy Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
You can buy Metal Coats in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but you’ll need to finish the main story and start the post-game content first.
You can buy a Metal Coat at Racine Construction. Go through the building, past where you battled Canari, and talk to the worker in the back. They’ll let you browse a selection of items, including the Metal Coat.
Each Metal Coat costs $4980, and there’s no limit to how many you can get. This means if you find a Shiny Scyther or Shiny Steelix, you’ll always be able to evolve them.
