How to Get New Villagers in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Okay, so in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you basically end up living on a deserted island with a few friendly animal neighbors. When you first start, there are only two villagers hanging around, but the whole point of the game is to convince more to move in and build up your little community. It’s super fun!

There are several methods for inviting villagers to your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and some let you choose who moves in more easily. This guide explains how to fill your island with the maximum of 10 residents.

How to Get More Villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

In the latest Animal Crossing game, players start on a deserted island with two initial villagers – one with a sisterly personality and one with a jock personality. Players work with Tom Nook to build up the island, and he provides plots of land that let you invite new villagers to join. Ultimately, you’re responsible for growing the island’s population! There are three different methods for attracting villagers to your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons:

Place a Plot and Wait a Day

If you don’t fill an empty house plot by the end of the day in New Horizons, a random villager will automatically move in overnight. So, one way to attract a new resident is to place a Getaway Package plot and then check it the next day – a villager will have moved in!

Find a Villager on a Nook Island

So, if I’ve got an empty plot on my island, I can head to the Nook Islands and find villagers! Basically, I just need to buy a Nook Miles Ticket for 2,000 Nook Miles and then show it to Orville at the airport – he’ll fly me over. It’s a great way to find new residents!

When you reach the island, find the campfire – villagers will be gathered around it. You can talk to a villager and, in the conversation, you’ll have the option to invite them to live on your island. If you decide you don’t want them to move in, just ignore them or choose the other dialogue option. Then, you can keep exploring the Nook Islands to find the perfect villager for you.

Invite a Campsite Visitor

Okay, so once I get my campsite set up on the island, visitors start showing up, which is cool! I can chat with them, and if I’m friendly and really encourage them to stay, they might actually decide to move in! Basically, I just have to talk to them and let them know I’d love to have them stick around after their visit.

Players can also invite villagers to their campsite using amiibo cards or figures. To do this, go to the Nook Stop terminal in Resident Services and choose the “Invite Camper” option. You can have one visitor at a time. If you want an amiibo villager to move in, the process is the same as with any other camper, but you’ll need to invite them back and talk to them for three consecutive days to convince them to stay.

You can also visit a friend who has a villager packing up to leave, and invite that villager to live on your island. If you’ve recently had a villager move from your island, they might actually move to a friend’s island on their own, using the same method described earlier.
