How to Get OP Fast in Ghost of Yotei

Starting Ghost of Yotei as Atsu can be challenging. Like the previous game, Ghost of Tsushima, it often throws you into fights with multiple enemies at once, which can feel overwhelming, especially at the beginning. Fortunately, there are ways to make the game easier as you progress. You can even significantly increase Atsu’s power quickly if you know where to look. This guide will show players who want to dominate combat how to become incredibly strong early on in Ghost of Yotei.

If you want a powerful start in *Ghost of Yotei*, focus on a few key things. First, find the best armor – luckily, good options become available early in the game. Second, unlock at least two different weapons as quickly as you can. Finally, gather important charms and the materials needed to upgrade your gear. Doing these things will make Atsu incredibly strong.

As a fellow player, I wanted to let you know you don’t *have* to get things in any particular order! We suggested starting with the armor because it gives you a really big boost right away, but honestly, go for the weapons first if you want, or even that cool charm you’ve been eyeing. The important thing is to collect everything, and you can do that however you like. Good news too – you can find all of these items in the first three areas of the game, so you won’t have to go too far!

Wrap Yourself in Power – Best Early Armor in Ghost of Yotei

Unlock the Bounty Master and Undying Samurai Armor Sets:

When preparing Atsu for the Yotei Six, armor is arguably the most crucial element. So, our first piece of advice is to get one of the top armor sets in *Ghost of Yotei*. Both are fairly easy to obtain, and many players consider them the best armor in the entire game, even beyond the early stages.

The best armor for you really depends on how you like to play. If you’re good at timing your blocks and dodges perfectly, then a lighter armor set will be ideal. This type of armor is best for players who enjoy a fast-paced, aggressive fighting style.

If you’re having trouble with big groups of enemies or frequently find yourself with very little health, this will be your best option.

How to Get the Bounty Master Armor:

The Bounty Master Armor is a very easy armor set to obtain in *Ghost of Yotei*. You can get it by completing all the bounties available in the Yotei Grasslands, which is where the game begins.

Check the bounty board at Yotei’s Shadow Inn to find available bounties. After you finish all of them, talk to Kojiro. He’ll give you a unique bounty that unlocks a special armor set.

The Bounty Master Armor set features the following perks:

  • Increases the window for Perfect Parries and Perfect Dodges, but regular parries are no longer available.
  • A Perfect Parry enables a new follow-up counterattack. Fully upgraded, you’ll get three follow-up attacks, making this incredibly powerful.
  • All types of spirit gains are increased by up to a massive amount (when fully upgraded).

How to Get the Armor of the Undying:

In *Ghost of Yotei*, you can obtain the Armor of the Undying by finding the Storyteller in the Ishikari Plain and talking to him.

You can find him at Storyteller’s Rest, which is in the north. After talking to him, you’ll have to find four wind chimes and then defeat the Undying Samurai in a duel.

The Armor of the Undying features the following perks:

  • When using the proper weapon, simply staggering an enemy restores health. This can be upgraded up to the massive level.
  • When using the proper weapon, Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge are easier to perform.
  • When using the proper weapon, Focus Attacks have a chance to increase stagger damage.

In the game, ‘weapon aligned’ means you’re using the best weapon to fight a specific enemy. For instance, Dual Katanas are most effective against enemies wielding spears.

Early-Game Arsenal – Unlock Dual Katanas, Yari, and Odachi

The First Three Additional Weapons Can Be Unlocked Very Quickly:

At the beginning of *Ghost of Yotei*, you’ll find the Katana isn’t very effective against enemies who don’t also use swords. When you encounter opponents with spears, shields, or tougher brutes, a better weapon becomes available. It’s a good idea to unlock the extra weapons in *Ghost of Yotei* as soon as you can.

How to Unlock Dual Katanas:

  • The quest to unlock the Dual Katanas is one of the first missions Atsu will encounter in Ghost of Yotei. When you first start the game, you’ll notice when looking through the Spyglass, that she mentions a location on Mount Yotei where the katanas can be located.
  • Collecting the Dual Katanas will help against Spears.
  • To become exceptionally OP, you’ll want to unlock the Dual Katana’s Spirit Attack, which is called Takezo’s Dual Slash. This attack will melt through any weapon type. To unlock it, you’ll need to complete “Takezo the Unrivaled,” one of the earliest Mythic Tales in the game. It is a difficult quest early on, but it is well-worth doing.

How to Unlock the Spear (Yari):

  • The spear – which is called a Yari in Ghost of Yotei – can be unlocked as soon as you gain access to Ishikari Plain. You’ll simply need to visit the island off the western coast of the region. There, you’ll find Sensei Takahashi’s Camp. Complete “The Way of the Yari” to unlock the weapon.
  • The Yari will help you against all dual-bladed weapons. Acquiring this weapon as early as possible will make the most difficult enemies in the game feel like much less of a threat.

How to Unlock the Odachi:

  • The Odachi is a massive sword that can be collected by visiting Master Yoshida’s Dojo in Tokachi Range. The dojo is located along the northwestern edge of the region, as seen in the image above.
  • The Odachi allows Atsu to not only to cut through Brutes as if they were any other enemy, but it is also the best early-game option for shield-bearing enemies. Much later in the game, you’ll unlock the Kusarigama, but in the early stages of the game, the Odachi is the definition of OP.

Make it Even Better – The Best Early Charms

Use These Six Charms to Get OP Early:

In Ghost of Yotei, charms are essential for maximizing your character’s potential. They can turn a solid build into an incredibly powerful one, especially early in the game. You won’t have access to all charm slots immediately; you’ll unlock them as you play. The good news is unlocking new slots is easy: simply find more charms! The Gear menu’s Charms section will always show you how many you need to unlock the next available slot.

Once you unlock Charm slots, you can upgrade them to Major Charm slots by finding more Charms. It’s always a good idea to collect Charms whenever you can! Look for them by completing side quests, checking out Fox Dens, buying them from shops, and visiting important Shrines throughout the game.

Focus on getting these six charms – the sooner you have them, the better. They continue to improve even while you’re not actively using them, just by keeping them in your bag.

  • Father’s Charm: This Charm can be collected from the Mount Yotei Shrine. You can find the entrance to the shrine along the western coast of the Yotei Grasslands. This charm starts off by providing a small amount of health every time you perform a Perfect Parry. It will eventually provide a major amount of health when fully upgraded. Using this with the Bounty Master Armor turns Perfect Parries into an extremely OP tool.
  • Charm of Futsunushi: This Charm can be collected from the Faithful Leap shrine in northeast Tokachi Range. This makes Perfect Parries and Perfect Dodges much easier to perform. Works best in conjunction with Father’s Charm and the Bounty Master Armor or Armor of the Undying.
  • Charm of Mount Yotei: This Charm is the reward for completing the Reliquary of Courage puzzle in central Yotei Grasslands. This charm begins by simply lowering all damage taken, but becomes incredibly powerful as you level it up by completing all Reliquary Puzzles. Even at level three, it begins to add health for all Perfect Parries. Working with the previous charms, you’ll see how it can be extremely powerful.
  • Charm of Last Chance: Purchase this Charm from Taro the Scavenger as soon as you interact with him. For only 150 coins, you’ll get one of the most useful charms in the game. Whenever you take lethal damage, this charm will automatically use the healing technique. As long as you have Spirit, you cannot die.
  • Charm of Enduring Resolve: This Charm is acquired by completing the Twin Path Fox Den in northern Ishikari Plain. You’ll find it just south of the White Deer Woodlands. This Charm has a chance of returning 1 Spirit node any time you use a Spirit skill.
  • Charm of Confident Strikes: Also purchased from Taro the Scavenger. This charm has a chance of filling one Spirit node any time you Stagger an enemy with the Katana.

More to Do – Upgrades, Supplemental Weapons, & Wolf Bond

There’s Always More to Do — Upgrades:

The items listed are some of the best you can get early in the game, but to become really powerful, you’ll need to fully upgrade them.

You can’t get Shinobi Steel or gun parts until you reach Teshio Ridge, which means you won’t be able to completely upgrade your gear without going north and potentially skipping some content. On the bright side, you can find Oni Raider Masks in the Ishikari Plain.

Defeating Oni Raiders gives you a good chance to find pieces of the Oni Raider Mask. Collecting these pieces lets you partially upgrade most of your weapons. While some armor doesn’t need them, the majority does.

Upgrading your armor sets significantly improves the special benefits they offer. If you want to make your armor incredibly powerful, it’s worth gathering the necessary resources to fully upgrade each set.

Supplamental Weapons – Scorch Bombs, Blind Bombs, and Metsubushi:

Don’t underestimate Atsu’s extra weapons. While bows are good for long-range attacks, players who prefer close combat will find Bombs and Quickfire Weapons especially helpful for managing groups of enemies.

Here’s how to get the three main early-game supplemental weapons:

  • Metsubushi: If you acquire the Bounty Master Armor, you’ll have already unlocked this incredibly powerful blinding weapon. You simply need to defeat Crow Genzo, one of the early-game bounties.
  • Scorch Bombs & Blind Bombs: These throwable weapons are obtainable by visiting Ina, the Bomb Maker at Fire Cricket Canyon in southern Ishikari Plain. You’ll get each weapon for completing her first two quests.

Wolf Bond – Visit Wolf Dens Early:

Finally, focus on strengthening your relationship with the Wolf. Throughout the game, the Wolf becomes a strong and helpful companion. The skills you choose will make the Wolf appear more often and become more impactful in battles. Building this bond can be a big advantage, even from the start of the game.

There are many ways to create a powerful build in *Ghost of Yotei*, but after about 60 hours of playing on Lethal difficulty, we believe this one is the most effective we’ve found.
