How to Get Shinobi Combat Styles in Rise of the Ronin

In the game Rise of the Ronin , the Shinobi’s combat postures are not only sleek and impressive, but also imposing, despite their inherent disadvantage in every encounter. They might not excel in head-on battles, but once players trigger their Countersparks, these stances become incredibly effective against all adversaries.

In the realm of fighting techniques within Rise of the Ronin, it’s just me and a select few that belong to the enigmatic Shinobi class. I manage to lay my hands on one quite early in the game, but the second remains elusive until much later on my journey.

How to Get The Hayabusa-ryu Style in Rise of the Ronin

Hayabusa-ryu is linked to the Ninja Gaiden series and boasts the famous Suplex move as one of its martial techniques. To acquire it, players must build a connection with Yasusuke Sawamura. Here’s how to do that during Act 1 in Yokohama:

1. Find and talk to Yasusuke at the following locations:
– At the entrance of the Yokohama Docks (daytime)
– In the Yokohama Slums (nighttime)

2. Complete the “The First Encounter” mission, which involves defeating a group of enemies near the Yokohama Slums during nighttime.

3. After completing the mission, return to talk to Yasusuke again at the entrance of the Yokohama Docks (daytime). He will then join you in your adventure.

  1. Complete the US Consul mission involving the assassination attempt on Townsend Harris.
  2. Start the Yokohama’s Shadow quest, then go to the Yokohama Grand Villa.
  3. Speak with Yukichi Fukuzawa and start the Cultural Exchange quest.
  4. After Cultural Exchange, speak with Fukuzawa again to start a Bond quest.
  5. Finish the Bond quest to unlock start bonds with Fukuzawa and Sawamura.

1. If Yukichi Fukuzawa is not available at the Grand Villa, move on to complete the Black Jewel side quest in western Yokohama.

2. After completing the Black Jewel side quest, advance Matthew Perry’s bond level to 2.

Ninja Villa Location in Edo

If you want to upgrade the Hayabusa-ryu style, you’ll need to deepen your bond with Sawamura. You can only do this once you reach Edo. Go to the Ninja Villa near the northwestern Veiled Edge banner in Kojimachi, then spar with Sawamura in the basement arena until you max his Bond level.

How to Get The Gikei-ryu Style in Rise of the Ronin

Gikei-ryu is a backhand grip style for katanas that features fast and flashy moves. To get it, you need to spare the Red Demon (Naosuke Ii) during the Sakurada Gate Incident mission in the final mission of Act 1. While you can get Gikei-ryu by killing Ii, this will lock you out of mastering the combat style later on.

To befriend the Blue Demon (Akikatsu Manabe) in Chapter 3, you’ll need to complete a side quest called The Watchmen. Once you have allied with him and he moves into the same Ninja Villa as Sawamura, you can spar with him to upgrade your Gikei-ryu martial arts technique.
