Lumiose City is teeming with Pokémon of all kinds! Pokémon Legends: Z-A features them throughout the city – you’ll see everything from little Pokémon like Eevee to strong ones like Garchomp.
Starmie, a beloved Pokémon that evolves from Staryu, is coming back in Legends: Z-A. This strong Water and Psychic-type Pokémon will also have a brand-new Mega Evolution!
Getting a Starmie in Pokémon Legends: Z-A requires a bit of effort – you’ll either need to find and catch a Starmie directly, or evolve a Staryu. Here’s how to do it.
How to Get and Evolve Staryu in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Staryu can be obtained and evolved into Starmie. This has been known since the very first Pokémon games – Starmie is simply Staryu’s evolved form.
You can find Staryu relatively early in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It appears in Wild Zone 2, which is one of the first areas of the game you’ll be able to access.
You can usually find Staryu near the water in Wild Zone 2. It’s a fairly common Pokémon – there are often two or three around, so it’s not too hard to catch. If you’re having trouble in battle, consider using an Electric- or Grass-type Pokémon.
After you catch this Pokémon, head to the Stone Emporium on the main street south of Lumiose City. You can buy Water Stones there, as well as fossils and other items.
If you buy a Water Stone at the Stone Emporium and have Staryu in your party, you can use the stone to evolve it into Starmie.
How to Catch Starmie in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
As you progress through the game, you can find and catch Starmie directly, skipping the need to evolve a Staryu. Starmie appears in Wild Zone 16, an area unlocked later in the game.
You’ll often find Starmie near the same areas where Flaaffy appear. Just be aware that a strong Alpha Ampharos can also spawn there, so be prepared!
You can find Starmie in both Wild Zone 16 and Wild Zone 20. The Starmie in Wild Zone 20 is an Alpha Pokémon, meaning it’s significantly stronger than normal, so make sure you’re ready for a tough battle before you try to catch it.
How to Mega Evolve Starmie in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
So, you’ve caught a Starmie! Many players want to Mega Evolve it, but first, you’ll need to find a Starminite. You can only get one by defeating the Rogue Mega Starmie, which will take some time and effort.
Mega Starmie shows up as a powerful, late-game opponent. You won’t be able to use Mega Evolution with your own Starmie until you’re very far into the game. But you can Mega Evolve many other Pokémon before facing Mega Starmie.
Once you win the battle, you’ll automatically get the Starminite needed to Mega Evolve Starmie. You won’t have to go to any special shops to get it.
