Weirdwood is an area in Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake that players need to navigate to collect items for the final sigils. It can be a tricky place to get through, and many players find it confusing. The area also features a challenging fight against three Mirages in Dragon Quest 1 Remake.
Okay, so in Dragon Quest 1, you can’t just wander into the Weirdwood whenever you feel like it. You have to rescue Princess Gwaelin first, and once you do, you get her necklace. That necklace is the key – it’s what lets you actually pass through. It’s all part of the main story, so you can’t miss it if you’re following the plot!
How to Get Through Weirdwood in Dragon Quest 1 HD Remake
When you first enter Weirdwood, you need to start a cutscene where Gwaelin contacts the Hero from Dragon Quest. You can eventually find this cutscene just by exploring, but here’s a reliable method to make it happen quickly:
- Enter Weirdwood.
- Walk up, and go left at the fork.
- Use the first path on the right to continue upward, and go right at the fork.
- Use the first path on the left to continue upward, veering to the right.
- Follow this path until you hit a loading zone, which will send you to the beginning of the Weirdwood.
- Repeat Steps 2–4 two times to trigger the cutscene.
How to Beat Mirages in Dragon Quest 1 HD Remake
Once you get to the Weirdwood scene in Dragon Quest, you can head up the path to battle three Mirages. This fight can be challenging, so it’s best to be at least Level 25 before trying it. If you’ve reached Level 25, here’s a strategy to help you defeat the Mirages:
Preparation
Before challenging the Mirages, players need to be at least Level 25 and also complete a few preparations.
- Make your equipment current, equipping items like the Tempest Shield (blue chest in Faerie Village), the Phantom Mask (blue chest in Citadel of the Monarch of Medals), and the Tectonic Plate (beyond the blue door in Cave of the Dwarves – B3).
- Load the Hero up with Antidotal Herbs and healing items (Special and Strong Medicines), and plan to use them in combat.
- Learn the Crackle spell. Players can learn this spell by using a scroll that is found in a chest in a building in the Faerie Village.
The Fight
With the proper preparations made, players should take this approach to the fight:
- If you are above 120 HP, not envenomated, and can cast Spells: cast Crackle.
- If you are above 120 HP, not envenomated, but cannot cast Spells: use the Defending Champion ability.
- If you are below 120 HP: use a healing item.
- If you are envenomated: use an Antidotal Herb.
The strategy involves repeatedly using the Crackle ability, and relying on Defending Champion, healing items, and Antidotal Herbs to stay alive without using a lot of MP. The goal is to defeat all three Mirages at the same time. Doing so prevents them from summoning reinforcements, which can be very challenging to handle at level 25. If you can’t defeat them all simultaneously, just keep fighting, restart if necessary, and try again.
You can still win this battle even if the first three Mirages aren’t defeated at the same time. Don’t give up! Keep fighting, and you might be able to overcome the extra enemies using Crackles and regular attacks.
