Captains are special crew members you can add to your ship. They provide various benefits, like faster movement, reduced penalties when carrying a lot of cargo, and increased ship health.

Sometimes, special events will give players a new Specialist. For instance, during the Gemini in the Rough event in Anno 117: Pax Romana, players can choose either Julius or Gaius to add to their team. While both of the Julius Lupus brothers are helpful, you can only select one.
