You can catch Legendary Pokémon like Xerneas in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but it will require a bit of effort and time to do so.
Although Zygarde is the main focus in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you’ll also need to catch Xerneas and Yveltal if you want to complete your Pokédex and fully finish the game.
Looking to catch Xerneas in Pokémon Legends: Z-A? We’ve put together a complete guide to show you everything you need to know.
How to Catch Xerneas in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

You can only encounter Xerneas after finishing the main story in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It’s part of the post-game experience and requires completing a special mission to unlock.
Once you’ve finished the Infinite Z-A Royale, go back to Hotel Z to check in with your team. You’ll then meet L, who will share news about the two Legendary Pokémon from the Kalos region—they’re on their way to Lumiose City following the story’s events. This starts a new mission called ‘The One That Gives,’ and your first step is to talk to Mable at the Research Lab.
After you meet Mable, you’ll face three powerful Alpha Pokémon in different Wild Zones. Two of these are particularly valuable to catch if you’re trying to complete your Pokédex. You can find details about each Alpha Pokémon and where to find them in the table below.
| Pokémon | Location | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha Steelix | Wild Zone 3 | 70 |
| Gallade | Wild Zone 5 | 70 |
| Pangoro | Wild Zone 9 | 70 |
Xerneas Location in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Once you’ve defeated the three Alpha Pokémon, go to Wild Zone 11 and navigate to the mission marker. Unfortunately, Xerneas is located across the river from the fast travel point, so you’ll need to walk around the edge of the Wild Zone to reach it.
Head to the mission marker and interact with it to make Xerneas appear. Then, get close to Xerneas to start the battle. Since Xerneas is a Fairy-type Pokémon, using Poison or Steel moves will be super effective. However, Mega Evolving one of your Pokémon should make the fight manageable.
You need to catch Xerneas to finish the mission. If you defeat it but don’t manage to catch it, you’ll have another chance. An Ultra Ball should make it fairly easy, so be sure to have plenty on hand before you start.
