How to Get X+Y Starters in Pokemon Legends Z-A (Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie)

Set in the Kalos region—the same location as *Pokémon X+Y*—*Pokémon Legends Z-A* boasts a large number of Pokémon to discover and catch, including many from the Kalos region’s original Pokédex. You’ll even be able to find the starter Pokémon from *X+Y*: Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie.

If you want to get the Kalos starters – Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie – in *Legends Z-A*, you’ll need to finish a unique questline for each one. This guide will show you how to catch them and offer helpful tips for completing each starter’s side quest in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*.

Where to Get Chespin in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Species: The Spiny Nut Pokemon

Chespin is a Grass-type Pokémon that evolves into Quilladin at level 16, and then into the Grass/Fighting type Chesnaught at level 36. In *Pokémon Legends Z-A*, you can find Chespin on the right side of the Rouge Sector, which is the northern part of Lumiose City. Look for a taxi driver next to his taxi and an especially feisty Chespin.

You’ll find it just north of Le Wow restaurant, a quick walk northeast from the main plaza. Speak to the taxi driver to start the ‘A Feisty Chespin’ side quest.

Legends Z-A ‘A Feisty Chespin’ Side Quest Walkthrough

This side quest is pretty straightforward: you just need to defeat Chespin three times consecutively. While it might seem challenging, bringing a powerful Fire-type Pokémon, such as a well-trained Litleo, should make it easy to win three battles in a row.

You’ll encounter Chespin at level 14. If you don’t have Fire-type attacks, you can still beat it with a Pokémon of similar level and a couple of potions.

If you lose to it three times, the creature will attack once more. Then, the taxi driver will suggest it join your team to give it a chance to battle. If you accept, you’ll finish the side quest and get Chespin in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*!

Where to Get Fennekin in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Species: The Fox Pokemon

Fennekin is a Fire-type Pokémon that evolves twice. It becomes Braixen at level 16, and then Delphox at level 36 – Delphox is both Fire and Psychic-type. In *Pokémon Legends Z-A*, you can find Fennekin by completing a side quest. Look for the quest marker in an alley northwest of the central plaza, near the entrance to the Rouge District and above the canal on the map.

Find the woman wearing a blue coat, as she’s standing near a Fennekin that doesn’t seem to be feeling well. Speaking to her will start the “Get Well, Fennekin” side quest.

Legends Z-A ‘Get Well, Fennekin’ Side Quest Walkthrough

To finish the ‘Get Well, Fennekin’ quest in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, you need to talk to a retired herbalist at Cafe Classe to figure out what’s bothering the Fennekin. If you haven’t been there yet, go south from the central plaza, about halfway down Vernal Ave, to find it. If you can’t fast travel, this will take you directly there.

The herbalist will tell you that your Fennekin needs a Revitalizing Twig to feel better. You can find these twigs in Wild Zone 5, which is north of Lumiose City – your map will show you where they are in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*. Just be aware that you’ll need to unlock the Lumiose Sewers before you can get to them.

After you can access the sewers again, head to Wild Zone 5 and find the sewer entrance. Search down there for Revitalizing Twigs. Bring one back to the sick Fennekin, and it will join your team as a thank you! This completes the side quest and adds Fennekin to your party in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*.

Where to Get Froakie in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Species: The Bubble Frog Pokemon

The final Pokémon from *Pokémon X+Y* available in *Legends Z-A* is Froakie, a Water-type that evolves into Frogadier at level 16. Frogadier then evolves into Greninja – a popular Pokémon from *X+Y* – at level 36, becoming a Water/Dark type. You can find Froakie by going to the very upper-right part of the map and searching for a construction site filled with scaffolding.

Speak with the construction site manager, and you’ll discover that the Froakie beside them holds the record for completing three different scaffolding obstacle courses. If you accept the challenge to beat its time, you’ll start the quest ‘A Challenge from Froakie’ in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*.

Legends Z-A ‘A Challenge from Froakie’ Side Quest Walkthrough

To get Froakie in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, you’ll need to complete three obstacle courses against the clock. The first course must be finished in under 30 seconds, the second in under 40, and the final one in under 50. Thankfully, these courses focus on tricky platforming, and you can retry them as many times as needed without penalty – there are no damaging obstacles to worry about!

  • The first obstacle course begins where you picked up the side quest.
    1. Go up, then turn left, climb up the ramp, then loop left and climb the ladder upward.
    2. Turn around and drop down onto the platform below, continue along the railing, then climb the ladder to get to the top.

  • The second obstacle course is right behind the first one, by the building on the opposite side of the square.
    1. Follow the path forward, turn right, and align your camera with your character. Keep your thumb on the right analog stick to re-adjust your camera during this obstacle course.
    2. Carefully, but quickly, cross the double planks between each of the platforms on this bottom level. You can sprint if you are careful with your movements to save some time.
      • If you fall off here, you should still have time to get back to the start for another attempt.
    3. At the other end, climb up the ladder, then walk across the single planks to get to the final ladder on the other side of this top level. Be very careful here – you do not have as much room for error, so it’s worth taking the time to adjust your camera and walk, not sprint, across.

  • The third obstacle course is a short distance away at the very north of the map. Walk along the city edge heading counter-clockwise (or just fast travel to Wild Zone 4 and go north to save some time).
    1. Climb the ladder ahead, then roll off the ledge directly in front of you. You should land on a platform across the gap.
    2. Turn right at the end of this second set of scaffolding and climb the ladder.
    3. Drop down to the right (without rolling) onto a platform just below.
    4. Adjust your camera so it is perfectly aligned with the single plank that leads across the road south. Carefully walk across the plank to get to the other side.
    5. Walk up to the top of the angled plank ramp in front of you, then roll off the top to get to another scaffold.
    6. Once again, adjust your camera to align with the plank, then carefully walk across to reach the final Froakie.

Once you finish the third obstacle course in *Pokemon Legends Z-A*, you’ll complete a side quest that lets you add Froakie to your team – make sure you accept when it’s offered!
