As you delve into Pharloom within Moss Grotto during your initial exploration, you’ll encounter Shell Shards for the first time. These Shell Shards function as a unique type of currency within the game, but their purpose becomes apparent only later on. However, after investing several hours into the game, players of Silksong might stumble upon a limit to the amount of Shell Shards they can accumulate.
After testing out various tools in Silksong, some players might be curious about expanding their tool ammunition as well. Fortunately, there’s an upgrade that lets you hold more of both – this tutorial will show you how to acquire more Shell Shards and guide you towards the first Tool Pouch upgrade in Silksong. This upgrade boosts the number of Shell Shards and tool ammo that Hornet can carry.
How To Get & Use Shell Shards in Silksong
Shell Shards Are Used For Crafting Gear, Replenishing Tools
In the game named “Silksong,” Shell Shards function as the primary currency. Their main purpose is to recharge Hornet’s tools that she carries. During rest periods at a bench, you use Shell Shards to replenish your tool ammunition. Some quests within “Silksong” also demand players to donate a specific amount of Shell Shards, such as the Bone Bottom Repairs quest, which needs 200x Shell Shards for completion.

In my adventure through Pharloom, I’ve discovered that I can gather more Shell Shards for Silksong by two methods: vanquishing foes or cracking Shell Shard deposits scattered across the landscape. Almost every creature I encounter drops a few Shell Shards when defeated (alongside Rosaries), resembling small, silver triangles that burst forth from slain enemies’ remains.
Shell Shard caches often have distinctive appearances, and they are usually identified by metallic-looking silver patterns. For instance, in one location, you may come across a very shiny stone that releases Shell Shards when struck. In another spot, you might encounter a taut rope adorned with Shell Shards which will scatter if you assault the rope.
Besides using basic tools, you could enhance them further to boost your Shell Shard collection. For instance, the Shard Pendant is an example of such a tool; when worn, it increases the quantity of Shell Shards dropped by enemies.
How To Carry More Shards & Tools in Silksong
Upgrade Your Tool Pouch to Increase Max Shards & Carry More Tools

To begin with, in Silksong, the Hornet character automatically holds up to 400 Shell Shards. Notably, each functional Tool, such as the Sharp Pin that sends a projectile ahead, also has a maximum ammunition capacity. If you decide to enhance the Tool Pouch, it will simultaneously boost both the maximum number of Shell Shards and the maximum ammo for your Tools.
In the game Silksong, to expand your inventory capacity for Shards and boost your maximum ammo for Tools, you should consider buying an upgrade for the Tool Pouch. The initial one that many players will encounter can be found in Pilgrim’s Rest, at the highest point within the Far Fields.

To gain entry into Pilgrim’s Rest, pay a fee of 30 Rosaries. After that, converse with Mort to view his merchandise.

The price for the Tool Pouch Upgrade is 220 Rosaries, which means you may need to part with some Rosary Strings from your inventory in order to purchase it. Upon acquisition, your maximum Shards will expand to 500, and every one of your Tools will reload additional ammo whenever Hornet settles on a bench.
In the game ‘Silksong’, there are probably several methods to boost the maximum number of Shards and Tool ammo, apart from purchasing the Tool Pouch upgrade from Mort at Pilgrim’s Rest. This guide will be expanded with more Tool Pouch locations as we delve deeper into Pharloom.
