As a huge Animal Crossing: New Horizons fan, one of the things I love is collecting everything! There’s so much furniture, clothes, tools, and stuff to find. But you quickly realize that your island just doesn’t have enough room to store all your favorite things – it’s a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless!
This guide explains how to increase your storage space in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, letting you collect and keep more items like tools, materials, clothes, and furniture.
How to Increase Home Storage in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Once players upgrade from a tent to a house, their storage capacity increases to 80 items. While this feels like a big improvement over the previous pocket limit of 20, players will quickly find that 80 spaces fill up fast in New Horizons due to the game’s many collectable items.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, your storage space grows as you improve your house. When you first start, living in a tent means you have no storage. But after upgrading with 5,000 Nook Miles, you’ll get 80 storage slots. Each further house expansion increases your storage capacity, eventually reaching 120 slots and beyond.

I’m really excited about the house upgrades! The more you improve your place, the more storage you get, which is awesome. Once you’ve finally paid off the basement, you can keep expanding your storage, but it does get pricier with each upgrade. Still, having more space is totally worth it, in my opinion!
To make your house bigger or get more storage space, talk to Tom Nook at the Resident Services counter and choose the ‘About my Home’ option.
How to Reach Maximum Storage Capacity in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players can store up to 9,000 items. To reach this maximum, you’ll need to fully upgrade your house and buy all six storage expansions. Here’s a breakdown of how much storage space each expansion provides and its cost.
| Storage size | Cost to unlock |
|---|---|
| 80 | 5,000 Nook Miles |
| 120 | 98,000 Bells |
| 240 | 198,000 Bells |
| 320 | 348,000 Bells |
| 400 | 548,000 Bells |
| 800 | 758,000 Bells |
| 1,600 | 1,248,00 Bells |
| 2,400 | 2,498,000 Bells + 500,000 Bells |
| 3,200 | 700,000 Bells |
| 4,000 | 900,000 Bells |
| 5,000 | 1,200,000 Bells |
| 7,000 | 1,500,000 Bells |
| 9,000 | 1,800,000 Bells |
You can build house upgrades whenever you’re ready to pay for them. However, storage upgrades unlocked after fully expanding your house require immediate payment. To finish paying off your house, you’ll need 2,498,000 Bells, and expanding your storage further costs an additional 500,000 Bells paid immediately.
It costs more than 12 million Bells to completely expand your house’s storage in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
