Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers a huge variety of furniture, clothes, tools, and materials. As you play, you’ll collect lots of things you want to save, but you’ll quickly realize there’s limited space to store everything!
As a huge Animal Crossing: New Horizons fan, I’m always looking for ways to expand! This guide is awesome because it walks you through everything you need to do to get more storage space for all your tools, materials, clothes, and furniture. It’s a lifesaver when you’re a collector like me!
How to Increase Home Storage in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Once players upgrade from a tent to a house, their storage capacity increases to 80 items. While that might seem like plenty, especially since they could only carry 20 items before upgrading their inventory, the world of New Horizons is full of so many collectibles that players will quickly fill up all available space.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, your storage space grows as you improve your house. When you first start, living in a tent means you have no storage. But after upgrading with 5,000 Nook Miles, you’ll get 80 storage slots. Expanding your house further increases this – to 120 slots with the next upgrade, and so on.

Okay, so as I upgrade my house, I get more storage space – which is awesome! Once I finally pay off the basement, I can keep upgrading my storage, but it gets pricier each time. It starts out cheap, but those later upgrades really start to cost a lot of in-game currency.
To make your house bigger or add more storage, talk to Tom Nook at the Resident Services counter and choose the “About my Home” option.
How to Reach Maximum Storage Capacity in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players can store up to 9,000 items. To reach this maximum, you’ll need to fully upgrade your house and buy all six storage expansions. Here’s a breakdown of how much space each expansion adds and its cost.
| Storage size | Cost to unlock |
|---|---|
| 80 | 5,000 Nook Miles |
| 120 | 98,000 Bells |
| 240 | 198,000 Bells |
| 320 | 348,000 Bells |
| 400 | 548,000 Bells |
| 800 | 758,000 Bells |
| 1,600 | 1,248,00 Bells |
| 2,400 | 2,498,000 Bells + 500,000 Bells |
| 3,200 | 700,000 Bells |
| 4,000 | 900,000 Bells |
| 5,000 | 1,200,000 Bells |
| 7,000 | 1,500,000 Bells |
| 9,000 | 1,800,000 Bells |
You can build house upgrades at any time and pay for them later, but storage upgrades unlocked after the final expansion require immediate payment. To fully pay off your house, you’ll need 2,498,000 Bells, and expanding your storage further costs an additional 500,000 Bells paid immediately to Tom Nook.
Players will need to earn more than 12 million Bells to completely expand their house storage in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
