How to join the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion

Note: This guide works for both The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Oblivion Remastered.

As a gamer in the realm of Oblivion, there’s no organization as enigmatic or lethal as the Dark Brotherhood. Unlike other guilds within this world, you can’t simply saunter up to their doorstep and apply for membership – locating their entrance is a challenge in itself. In fact, it took me quite a while to find the hidden way into their ranks.

If you’ve chatted with some folks in Oblivion, you might have picked up a couple of whispers about the Dark Brotherhood. But, if you’re keen on becoming part of this elusive group of killers, there’s just one method to locate them: provoke them into seeking you out instead.

Here are the steps to follow to join the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion:

How to join the Dark Brotherhood

1. Kill someone

The first step is actually pretty simple: kill someone.

However, it’s important to note that members of the Dark Brotherhood don’t condone indiscriminate killing. They are only interested if you have intentionally killed someone who was not initially trying to harm you, such as a peaceful villager or unarmed traveler. It’s the act of murdering an innocent that truly piques their interest.

Further below, you’ll find certain recommendations regarding characters to refrain from eliminating. It’s best to avoid killing individuals who provide quests, manage shops, or play crucial roles in your daily activities. Additionally, there are numerous “essential” Non-Player Characters (NPCs) that cannot be killed. You can identify them by the appearance of a crown symbol when you attempt to interact with them.

Should you execute the task correctly, a message will appear on your screen when your target is deceased: “Unknown forces have noticed your act of taking life…

That means the Dark Brotherhood is now aware of you.

2. Go to sleep

Your next step is to go to sleep.

Option A: Seek shelter for the night at an inn or secure location and decide to rest there. Upon doing so, you’ll receive a message saying “The air turns cold, and a dark figure looms closer…” After waking up, you’ll encounter Lucien Lachance, a member of the Dark Brotherhood, who will instruct you on the steps required to join their organization. Shockingly, he requests that you assassinate someone else.

3. Kill Rufio

Lucien has asked you to eliminate a man named Rufio, who can be found at the ominously titled Inn, located north of Bravil. You may approach the innkeeper, Manheim, or investigate the cellar where you’ll locate Rufio. Feel free to engage him in conversation before attacking, as he won’t attempt to flee from the cellar regardless of your initial actions.

4: Go to sleep again

It’s most convenient to catch some rest in Rufio’s bedroom. Later on, Lucien will be back to guide you to Cheydinhal and direct you to an abandoned house close to the eastern wall. Once there, enter its basement using a lockpick, then search for a door marked with a skull and red handprint, which can be quite subtle. When prompted with a question at that door, respond by saying “Sanguine, my Brother.

Congratulations! You’ve been accepted into the Dark Brotherhood, and your initial assignment is about to start. Break a leg, assassin. Wishing you success on this venture.

Good NPCs to kill to join the Dark Brotherhood

One enjoyable aspect of becoming part of the Dark Brotherhood is selecting your initial victim to draw attention from the assassins’ guild. However, if you find it hard to make that choice, let me offer some possible candidates instead.
