How to Keep PS1 Startup Screen and 30th Anniversary Themes

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, the announcement of Sony’s 30th Anniversary celebrations for PlayStation has me feeling like a kid in a candy store. I can still remember the excitement I felt when I first held that iconic gray box back in 1994. The PS5’s limited-time display of the classic PS1 startup screen and the selection of dynamic themes inspired by the previous consoles are a delightful trip down memory lane.

2024 signifies the 30-year milestone for the iconic PlayStation, initially debuting in Japan on December 3, 1994. To commemorate this momentous occasion, Sony has gone above and beyond, offering special edition console launches, an extensive PS Store sale featuring around 500 price cuts, and a couple of 30th Anniversary PlayStation Stars challenges taking place.

For a limited time, owners of PlayStation 5 may encounter a nostalgic PS1 startup screen upon initial startup. Additionally, they can select from various themes inspired by the previous four PlayStation consoles leading up to the PS5, including a unique 30th Anniversary theme.

Sony hasn’t specified exactly when they’ll disappear, but many believe it will happen by January. Since the themes can potentially be removed via an update, PS5 owners can retain these themes if they choose to forego all future software updates. However, this might not be a viable option for those who enjoy online gaming or purchase digital games, as updating is usually necessary in such cases. In the meantime, fans can only hope that Sony decides to keep the themes even after their 30th Anniversary celebrations conclude.
