How to Lockpick in Star Wars Outlaws

As someone who’s spent countless hours huddled over my console, fiddling with lockpicks and hacking devices in various open-world games, I can say that Star Wars Outlaws has certainly captured my heart with its unique take on the classic minigame. The Data Spike mechanic, while reminiscent of other games, offers a fresh rhythm-based challenge that’s both engaging and, at times, infuriatingly addictive.

In the present day, an open-world game feels incomplete without some type of lockpicking or hacking mini-game; otherwise, it’s not truly a game, isn’t it? Fortunately, Ubisoft has catered to this need in Star Wars Outlaws, as it includes both. However, they can be quite challenging. Here’s a guide on how to lockpick in Star Wars Outlaws!

How to Use the Data Spike in Star Wars Outlaws

If you’ve dabbled with Skyrim or Fallout 4, you’ll find the lockpicking minigame interface in Star Wars Outlaws quite familiar. Unlike these games, however, the minigame in Star Wars Outlaws involves using a Data Spike, which you’ll repair during the game’s introduction. However, the rhythm and timing of the correct sequence make it more musical than its popular counterparts.

While the tumbler spins, the mini-game interface on the right flashes rhythmically, often matching the beats of the accompanying musical notes. Your goal is to align your device with this flashing light in sync. It’s essential that you find harmony.

As such, take your time and try to memorize the pattern. Time it out and prepare yourself to mimic said pattern perfectly. You must time your presses to match the rhythm. There’s no rush, as you appear to be utterly invincible while in this mode, and there’s no penalty for messing up besides needing to repeat the rhythm cycle. Otherwise, you have as many attempts as you’d like.

You Can Make Lockpicking Easier

I totally understand the desire to altogether remove a lockpicking minigame from an open-world adventure. After a while, it becomes tedious. I felt the same after the first lockpicking mission in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. In Star Wars Outlaws, you can make lockpicking easier, though.

  1. Open the main menu.
  2. Navigate to Settings.
  3. Choose Gameplay.
  4. Scroll down about 3/4s of the way until you spot Lockingpicking Difficulty.

In Star Wars Outlaws, you have the option to simplify the lockpicking minigame. You can toggle visual hints and eliminate the rhythm element entirely. If you decide to get rid of the rhythm-based challenge, Kay Vess will automatically open a door using her Data Spike as soon as she interacts with a lock. I completely understand if you choose to activate this feature!

If you’re eager to uncover the complete abilities of Star Wars Outlaws, perhaps diving into its extensive collection of achievements would be a great starting point?
