How to Play as Ser Duncan the Tall in Crusader Kings 3’s AGOT Mod

The story of Dunk and Egg, based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas, can be experienced in the PC game Crusader Kings 3 thanks to the popular mod CK3 AGOT. This total conversion mod allows players to step into the world of A Game of Thrones, and is constantly being updated by a dedicated team. They’ve already added exciting features like dragons and locations from Essos, with even more content planned for the future.

Players new to the ‘A Game of Thrones’ story or who haven’t completed the first season might want to choose a different character than Ser Duncan. His storyline begins after the events of the Tourney at Ashford.

A Required CK3 DLC To Play As Ser Duncan The Tall

I’m used to playing Crusader Kings 3 by controlling a whole country, like as a king or even just a smaller ruler. But with the Roads to Power DLC, things got really interesting! Now I can start as a Landless Adventurer, basically a wanderer with nothing, and try to build my power from scratch. If you want to play as Dunk, you need this DLC – it’s the only way to do it!

If you don’t want to purchase the DLC, there are still plenty of fantastic Crusader Kings 3 A Game of Thrones starting points available. You can play as characters like Ned Stark, Rhaenyra Targaryen, or Robert Baratheon, and dragons even appear in some other game starts.

Other DLCs For The Best Experience As Dunk

While no other DLCs are required, there are a few that will make adventures with Dunk more fun.

  • Tours & Tournaments: Tourneys are central to Dunk’s story, so this DLC is heavily recommended.
  • Wandering Nobles: An event pack centered around traveling, which is common for Dunk.
  • Wards & Wardens: An event pack about childhood and education, which is fitting with Egg as Dunk’s ward.

How To Play As Ser Duncan The Tall In CK3

The CK3 AGOT mod can take several minutes to load, so don’t worry if it seems stuck. Once it’s finished loading, begin a new game.

This bookmark contains spoilers revealing plot points and the ending of Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Start by clicking the “Black Dragon” tab, then select the “Shadows of Ashford” bookmark. This begins the story in the year 209 AC, right after the events of the Tourney at Ashford Meadow. Essentially, it continues where Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and the first Dunk & Egg novella, The Hedge Knight, left off.

You might recognize some characters, like Prince Maekar, but be sure to select Ser Duncan the Tall to begin playing.

Playing As Ser Duncan & A Landless Adventurer

Players are free to explore with Dunk and Egg however they choose. They can continue the story from the next two books, or travel to any location in Westeros and the parts of Essos that are accessible in the game.

The game encourages a life of adventure and combat, and players will select a god to follow. You can build up your adventurer’s camp by recruiting allies, participating in tournaments, fighting as a mercenary in wars, completing jobs for nobles, and enjoying many other activities.

This guide is for starting as a Landless Adventurer in Crusader Kings 3, and much of the advice will also work in the A Game of Thrones mod. Keep in mind that the AGOT mod does add some unique features and rules.

A Later Start Date – After The Spring

Alternatively, the “After the Spring” bookmark is set two years after the events in the “The Sworn Sword” story, and ideally, will tie into a potential second season of the HBO series.

You can also play as Dunk in this section, and you’ll encounter planned story moments featuring characters like Lady Rohanne Webber and Ser Eustace Osgrey.

You can also play as Egg later in the game once he’s grown up, but revealing how that happens would spoil the story.
