How to play co-op with friends – Elden Ring Nightreign

At its core, Elden Ring Nightreign is primarily designed as a multiplayer experience. Ideally, you’d team up with two friends by either sharing a password or creating a party. But fear not, if you don’t have companions to play with, the game’s automatic matchmaking system is there to help. However, it’s good to know how this feature functions, especially when an Earth Shift event is ongoing.

How to play co-op with friends

First things first, let’s start with the fun activity: playing games together with your buddies. Luckily, cooperative play in Elden Ring Nightreign is less challenging compared to other FromSoftware games. Once you complete the tutorial and arrive at Roundtable Hold, approach the Great Site of Grace and adjust to the Matchmaking Settings. Click on ‘Invite Members’ and pick your preferred companions to join in the fun.

Once your friends agree, they’ll tag along for your party. You’ll find a list of all player names displayed at the upper-right corner of the screen. At this juncture, each player needs to move towards the table and signal their readiness to play. The host then chooses which Adventure to embark upon. When everyone is ready, the game session will commence.

How passwords work

As a gamer, I utilize passwords to control who I’ll team up with when scouting for more players. By inputting a Multiplayer Password, only those who have the same password can potentially join my ranks. This feature is particularly useful within large friend groups or online communities where I want to randomly encounter different players from the circle.

Can you play with two players?

Regrettably, Elden Ring Nightreign doesn’t support two-player games. An Expedition can begin either when you’re playing alone or if there are all three players present. The closest thing to a duo match is by joining a three-player Expedition and waiting for the third player to leave.

Matchmaking rules

In addition to Elden Ring Nightreign, there are unwritten guidelines governing player connections via matchmaking. While these aren’t explicitly stated within the game, they do influence your ability to join up with other players online.

  • You must beat the Tricephalos Expedition before you can matchmake with other players that have access to the other Expeditions.
  • You must have unlocked a Shifting Earth event to matchmake with a player that has the Shifting Earth event active. For instance, if someone has the Crater event active, you must have unlocked the Crater event else you will not match with them.
  • If you have a Remembrance quest active, you will not matchmake with someone who also has a Remembrance quest active. There cannot be two Remembrances active at once. If you join a player through an invite, the first person to begin the process will have their Remembrance active on the map.

If you’re finding it tough with matchmaking, make sure there isn’t an active Shifting Earth event occurring. You can deactivate this event by heading to the bed located in the eastern wing of the Roundtable Hold.

Collaborating on Elden Ring’s Nightreign in multiplayer mode feels simpler than ever in a FromSoftware game, but keep in mind that certain events and questlines may still leave you scratching your head. A crucial point to recall is that the host of the game usually has more control, so if you encounter any issues, check out our guide on Elden Ring’s Nightreign for further assistance with this latest FromSoftware adventure.
