Nioh 3 can be a really challenging game, particularly when you encounter difficult bosses or levels packed with strong enemies. While there are several ways to overcome these obstacles, playing with a friend or using AI-controlled allies in co-op mode is often the most effective solution.

Playing Nioh 3 with friends dramatically changes the experience, and you can even earn rewards by helping other players online, even when you’re not actively playing with them. Here’s a guide to getting multiplayer set up.

How to Play Multiplayer in Nioh 3

Okay, so in Nioh 3, there are two main ways to jump into multiplayer. I can either become a ‘Visitor’ and get summoned by someone else, or I can join another player’s world through Expeditions. Both let me play with others, but they work a little differently – it’s cool to have options!

As a fan, I’ve found that getting into co-op is super easy! You just head to any Shrine in the game and choose the ‘Co-Op’ option. From there, you can pick whether you want to play with random players or set up a more specific game with custom settings. It’s a great way to team up and tackle challenges with others!

Nioh 3 Visitor System, Explained

In Nioh 3, when using the Visitor matchmaking system, you have two options: you can request help from other players, or you can offer help to someone else who is requesting it. Players who are available as Visitors will appear with a golden glow, and they can only be summoned while you’re on a mission. Keep in mind that Visitors can’t open chests or interact with other objects in the environment.

You can invite other players to help you by using Ochoko Cups. You earn these cups by finding them in the game world or by completing missions as a Visitor yourself. After successfully finishing a mission, you’ll be rewarded with items, Glory, and Amrita. Best of all, there’s no cost to become a Visitor!

How to Place Benevolent Graves

Okay, so Benevolent Graves are these cool blue swords you find scattered around, and when you activate them, they summon helpful NPCs to fight alongside you! I’ve learned you can even place your own down, which is awesome. You need Righteous Jaspers for that – you can get those by being a good Samaritan and helping other players when you’re a Visitor, or sometimes you can find them for sale from the Sudama merchant in the Eternal Rift. It’s a bit random with Sudama, but definitely worth checking!

Nioh 3 Expeditions, Explained

Expeditions mode is different from Visitor mode because players have more control over how they interact with the environment, like Shrines, chests, and collectibles. If a player is defeated in Expeditions mode, they can revive themselves or be revived by a teammate, but each revival uses up some of the team’s shared Assist Gauge. If the Assist Gauge empties, the entire expedition fails.

There are two kinds of Expeditions, and each has its own rules and restrictions.

Expedition Story Mode

Story Mode lets up to three players explore a world together, offering a free-roaming experience hosted by one player. While exploring, players can find treasure chests and collectibles like Kodamas and Scampusses. However, only the host player’s story will advance, though their companions can assist with story quests.

Expedition Mission Mode

You can only replay missions you’ve already finished, including any unlocked side missions, in Mission Mode. For example, you can fight Jakotsu-Baba early on in the Crucible Manifested mission after completing it. To host an Expedition Mission, you need to have unlocked the corresponding quest first. Similarly, you can’t join other players’ lobbies if you haven’t reached that part of the story yourself.

As a longtime fan, I’ve learned that your companions can only get healed up at those Shrine spots once each. And a really nice detail? When you’re running Expedition Missions and hit a Shrine to heal, it doesn’t bring enemies back to life – which is super helpful when you’re trying to push through!

Which Co-Op Mode Should You Pick?

If all you want is someone who can help you fight stuff, call a Visitor, or be a Visitor yourself.
If you want to explore Nioh 3’s open maps with friends, choose Expedition Story mode.
If you want to farm missions or complete sub-missions with friends, choose Expedition Mission mode.
- Expedition Mission mode also rewards you with loot and resources at the end of a successful run, as if you were playing as a Visitor. Both are excellent sources of Amrita as well.
