As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Thor is truly a formidable character to have on your team. His raw power and unique abilities make him a force to be reckoned with in the battlefield.

Discussing Marvel Comics and powerful characters inevitably brings up Thor, who holds various titles such as Odinson, self-proclaimed Mightiest Avenger, and the God of Thunder among others.

If you’re a fan of the mighty Thor, get ready for an exciting experience! You can actually play him in Marvel Rivals. As for his skill level, he’s rated at 3 stars, making him a challenging character to master.

Compared to Magik’s sword, Mjolnir appears relatively compact and doesn’t have the same extended reach. This might lead one to believe that Thor primarily relies on close combat rather than long-range attacks.

Indeed, for the most part, he excels at long-range attacks. However, by choosing the right combinations, you can maximize his potential in this area.

Instead of diving headfirst into combat alongside Thor without a strategy, it could lead to catastrophe. Fear not! Here’s an extensive guide detailing the workings of his powers, complete with helpful hints and strategies that will empower you to rule your battles.

Thor Abilities Explained

As a gamer diving into the world of my favorite hero, Thor, grasping the essence of his passive ability, Thorforce, is an absolute must for any successful battle.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share an insight about wielding the mighty Thor: Three tiny hammers, reminiscent of his iconic weapon, appear beneath my aiming reticle. Among his five primary skills, a trio are empowered by Thorforce, which not only bolsters my health but also triggers a cooldown for all abilities that require this force once activated.

Yet, it’s important to note that the deity of thunder isn’t limited to a single skill. Here’s a summary of his complete arsenal for your perusal:

Ability Description
Mjolnir Bash Use Mjolnir to strike enemies. During the awakened state, you can use it to launch lightning arcs forward.
Hammer Throw You can use your alt-fire to throw Mjolnir at an enemy. This ability uses 1 Thorforce.
Storm Surge Holding this ability makes Thor spin Mjolnir. Releasing it lets you dash or fly toward an enemy. Hitting a target with a Storm Surge will knock them back. This ability also uses 1 Thorforce.
Lightning Realm Use this ability near enemies to restore Thorforce. You restore more of it when you hit more enemies.
Awakening Rune Thor uses all 3 of his Thorforce hammers to enter an awakened state. During this, you get temporary Bonus health and can use Mjolnir Bash for ranged attacks.
Thorforce (passive) Use any of the Thorforce abilities to get 100 Bonus health. Landing a Mjolnir Bash hit on an enemy while the hammer grows blue, will instantly restore one charge of Thorforce.
God of Thunder Fly upwards to charge Mjolnir for a few seconds. Enemies within its charge range take lightning damage. You can ascend or descend to change your flight’s height while using the ultimate.

Thor Offensive Strategies

With your understanding of Thor’s powers now complete, the true test and excitement starts – it’s time to apply his abilities.

Players controlling Thor should pay close attention to the battlefield and manage their ability cooldowns carefully. Although each Thorforce power has a brief 2-second cooldown, they are connected in a way that activating one temporarily disables the others.

In other words, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with several useful combinations of moves, which can prove beneficial in various offensive scenarios.

  • Initiate fights with Hammer Throw and Mjolnir Bash: Hammer Throw uses Thorforce, which lets you start the fight with a bonus of 100 health. If you follow up this attack with a Mjolnir Bash, not only will you recover the lost Thorforce, but the cooldown starts for Hammer Throw, which should let you use it again quickly once it gets ready.
  • Hammer Throw hits enemies while returning: In the heat of the battle, there will be times when you miss hitting your target. Just because you missed the shot the first time doesn’t mean it has been completely wasted. Your hammer throw has a maximum range of 20 meters. Direct hit does the most damage. However, it still does some damage to the enemies hit by it while it returns to you. If you miss directly hitting your target, you can move around them so that it hits them when Mjolnir returns to you.
  • You can isolate enemies using Storm Surge: While great for flying or dashing away from an enemy, this ability serves another purpose. You can use Storm Surge to isolate an enemy from their team. The best and tricky part is the longer you charge your Storm Surge, the further away you can take them. However, this won’t be easy to use, so it is best to use it on stunned enemies.
  • God of Thunder can be canceled: Thor’s ultimate, while powerful, is very easy to counter. Almost every hero that can stun or interrupt their target in any way has a chance to stop Thor while he is in the middle of charging his ultimate. The fact that he shouts during it and alerts the enemy team also doesn’t help, as they can focus their attacks on you. One trick that you can use to make it harder for them to cancel your ult is to fly up high. Hold the jump button while using your ultimate to make it harder for foes to hit you.

Thor Defensive Strategies

As a die-hard fan, I often find myself marveling at Thor’s Storm Surge maneuver, which undeniably comes in handy during battles. Yet, even though this power sets him apart from heavyweights like Magneto, it’s crucial not to overly depend on it.

If your entire team is eliminated during a skirmish, leaving you as the lone guardian of the objective, it’s crucial to employ certain tactics to keep control until reinforcements arrive. Here’s a collection of defensive strategies and clever tips tailored for these isolated scenarios.

  • Practice using Storm Surge: Storm Surge has a surprisingly limited travel distance. An uncharged use takes you only 10 meters, while a fully charged Storm Surge lets you cover nearly 20 meters. Make sure you practice using this ability in the practice range and on most maps. This will help you play better when in a quick or competitive match.
  • Your maximum bonus health is 200: Thor’s default health is 600. Using Thorforce with his abilities, Thor gets an additional 100 bonus HP. But when using Awakening Rune, you get 200 HP. This can help you out in a dire situation. So, when you know your team is about to reach you, instead of using Storm Surge, you can use Awakening to get more health and stay alive for longer. Just remember that you won’t be able to use other abilities while in that state.
  • Don’t forget about Lightning Realm: Compared to the rest of Thor’s abilities, Lightning Realm isn’t exactly offensive. It also isn’t useful for escaping enemies. That is why it is very easy to forget about it. However, it can be very useful when the enemy team gangs up on you. If you are low on Thorforce, you can use Lightning Force when surrounded by enemies to instantly recover all three Thorforce hammers. Now, use Awakening Rune to get a 200 bonus health. While awakened, Thor emanates lightning arcs that slightly damage the enemies.
  • For escaping use the Hammer Throw, Mjolnir Bash, and Storm Surge combo: Since Thorforce abilities have a 2-second cooldown, instead of directly turning your back on your enemy. Start by hitting them with a hammer throw. Next, follow it up with a Mjolnir Bash. Finally, use a charged Storm Surge to dash or fly away from your enemy. Even though you will take damage in the fight, you should get 200 bonus HP. Once away, you can use Awakening Rune to get more bonus health. This gets capped at 800 HP, but you will be equipped with a stronger Mjolnir Bash, which should let you hold off the enemy until a healer can get to you or if you can find a health kit.

Thor Team-Up Abilities

Team-Up Heroes Needed Description
Odinson Reborn (passive) Hela With Hela in team, if Thor dies during battle and Hela lands the final hit to kill an enemy, Thor will revive during the respawn phase. If he is already alive, then he gets bonus health.
Thor
Thunderous Deity (passive) Thor Thor infuses Thorforce to grant electrifying enhancements to Captain America and Storm. It lets Storm use lightning barrage on the enemies. Meanwhile, Captain America gets a movement boost, and his shield attacks electrocutes nearby enemies.
Storm
Captain America

As a gamer, I find that Thor doesn’t just have one Team-Up skill; instead, he boasts a dual ability setup. The first one amplifies my personal power, while the second one empowers my teammates, making us an unstoppable force together on the battlefield.

With Hela being Thor’s sister, it becomes clear why he gains an advantage when they fight together. The ‘Odinson Reborn’ passive is particularly handy for Thor, as he struggles to regenerate health without a health pack at hand or a healer close by.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but appreciate the tactical advantage that Hela’s power of resurrecting Thor provides. In a tight spot, being able to bring back Thor with just one kill could potentially shift the tide in our favor. Similarly, having a vanguard in battle is an invaluable asset when it comes to seizing or maintaining control over an objective.

The passive ability of Thor’s Thorforce could potentially be a pivotal factor, benefiting not just him, but also his allies such as Storm and Captain America.

One great aspect is that this skill isn’t limited to a single position. Therefore, based on your team’s requirements for a duelist or a vanguard, choosing Storm or Captain America might just be the ideal choice.

Thor Counters & How To Deal With Them

Thor stands out as a versatile hero with few vulnerabilities. His equipment, Thorforce, grants him several health advantages. In addition, he’s capable of escaping tricky predicaments using his Storm Surge ability. However, it’s his struggle to counter fast-moving enemies that presents the biggest challenge for him.

Generally speaking, Thor primarily excels in close combat situations. Therefore, encounters against opponents such as Iron Man, Star-Lord, or Psylocke often don’t end favorably for him.

Each of these characters boasts a variety of evasive maneuvers that complicate Thor’s attempts to strike them, and on top of that, they possess powerful long-range attacks as well.

As a gamer, I’ve found that most vanguards aren’t much of a challenge for Thor, but a well-played Venom can certainly give him a tough fight. In a one-on-one duel, Venom has the potential to deal more damage than Thor due to his extra health and ability to dodge into safety to pick up health packs or dash towards healers.

A good tactic when facing these opponents is delaying them until your allies arrive to support you. If an airborne adversary such as Iron Man exhibits consistent patterns, you can consistently employ the Awakening Rune for long-range assaults.

However, employing Thorforce in this manner drains it, making Storm Surge unavailable for a while. Therefore, stay alert on the battlefield and choose actions tailored to your present circumstances.

Best Team Comps With Thor

In terms of teaming up with Thor, both Hela and Storm are exceptional duelists. Yet, it’s important to note that Storm is relatively less powerful compared to other heroes within her classification. However, the additional lightning abilities she possesses serve as a valuable asset to compensate for her otherwise weaker set of skills.

Regarding Hela, she’s currently among the top duelists in the game. Her synergy with her brother-sister pair is impressive even without considering their Team-up passive ability.

In flight, Hela gains an edge over her adversaries in both airborne and distant engagements. Conversely, Thor engages foes at close quarters. Thus, diversifying our team’s approach to ranged conflicts proves highly beneficial.

For vanguards, the best hero you should play with Thor is Groot. His ability to create walls is excellent for isolating enemies. So no matter if you are bashing them with your Mjolnir or shooting lightning arcs at them while awakened. Killing enemies can get a lot easier for Thor when playing with Groot.

Moreover, Groot can provide assistance to Thor when his health is depleting and he requires a quick exit. By creating a barrier against the enemy, Groot allows Thor to safely execute his Storm Surge move.

If you’re considering Team-Up passives, Captain America makes a great choice too. Remember, when pairing them up, Captain America is ideal for absorbing damage (or tanking) and securing objectives. On the other hand, Thor performs better in offensive, aggressive roles.

Lastly, if you’re seeking a skilled tactician for Thor, consider either Cloak & Dagger or Mantis. These characters possess remarkable abilities to heal adversaries from a distance.

In a tight spot, Dagger can assist Thor by wielding Lightforce daggers. If Thor’s health drops critically low, he has the option of performing a Storm Surge, which will transport him into Dagger’s protective healing force field called Dagger Storm. This will instantly restore Thor to full health, allowing him to re-enter the battle ready and refreshed.

Regarding Mantis, she serves not only as a healer but also enhances Thor’s offensive capabilities. With her “Allied Inspiration” skill, she can boost Thor’s damage output. Furthermore, her “Spore Slumber” ability is useful for incapacitating enemies, either facilitating Thor’s escape or enabling him to deliver the final blow more easily, depending on the scenario.
