Given that he’s always up close with enemies, carelessness can lead him into dangerous situations.

If you’re a beginner with Marvel Rivals or simply eager to learn more about Wolverine’s gameplay style, this tutorial is designed to help you understand his skills and master their effective usage.

Wolverine’s Abilities Overview

Wolverine’s gear appears uncomplicated at first glance, but it has a complex structure beneath. Essentially, his equipment is based on the Rage mechanic; as you inflict more harm, your rage grows, and with increased rage, you become capable of dealing even greater damage.

Initially, it may seem puzzling, but once you tinker with it, you’ll grasp the whole mechanism. To clarify, let me briefly outline Wolverine’s powers for you.

Abilities Description
Savage Claw Basic claw attack. Stronger after using Feral Leap.
Feral Leap Leaps at and slams an enemy. Makes claw attacks stronger briefly.
Vicious Rampage Dashes forward with a claw attack. Good for closing distance.
Undying Animal Howl and get a 50% damage reduction for a short time.
Last Stand (Ultimate) Launches and spins through enemies before slamming them down. More damage with more Rage.
Regenerative Healing Factor Heals Wolverine and gives bonus health that turns into a big heal. Clears Rage. Assists on kills to reduce its cooldown.
Berserker Rage (Passive) Attacking or taking damage builds Rage. More Rage = more claw damage and healing.

In every attack, Wolverine deals a proportion of damage, implying that the higher an opponent’s health, the greater the damage Wolverine inflicts. Moreover, his damage output increases even further as his rage level grows.

Wolverine Offensive Strategies

Wolverine is built for a bold, assertive game approach. Engaging in fights fearlessly and standing your ground is highly recommended with him. His tools are optimized for aggressive play, so don’t hold back. Additionally, he has a good amount of toughness, making him capable of withstanding quite a lot of damage.

Here are some tips to make your Wolverine even more deadly on offense.

  • Isolate Enemies with Feral Leap: Feral Leap is the most important ability in Wolverine’s kit. It allows you to isolate enemies easily and finish them off. You can do this with tanks and healers. I usually use it to bring the healer from the backlines to the center of the fight so my duelists and tanks can finish them off.
  • Target Tanks: Wolverine is designed to take on tanks, as most of his abilities do percentage damage based on enemy health. So, tanks with the most health also take the most damage by Wolverine attacks. Plus, you should also target tanks with your feral leap and take them off the objective. This has won me a lot of matches in overtime, where I just take the tank off the objective, giving my team enough time to capture it again.
  • Walk Instead of Using Abilities: Wolverine’s abilities have long cooldowns, especially the Feral Leap. So, you should not use them to close the distance. A lot of players like to use Feral Leap to get into the fight, but this puts your most important ability on cooldown during the fight. Instead, walk up to the fight and then use your abilities to finish off the enemy.
  • Farm Rage off of Tanks: Wolverine deals more damage when he is in Rage, but it takes a lot of hits to get to max rage. Now, most duelists won’t take that many hits. They will either run away or kill you before you reach max rage. Tanks, on the other hand, have a lot of health and don’t deal a lot of damage, so you can easily farm rage on them.

Combos

With Wolverine, being a close-combat character, he primarily utilizes combination moves to ensure his attacks are effective. Essentially, these involve swiftly linking his skills one after the other for maximum damage output. Here’s a list of some useful combos you can experiment with using Wolverine.

  • Dash into Feral Leap: This is the bread and butter of his kit. You can dash into an enemy and immediately Feral Leap to isolate them. Then, you can just finish them off easily.
  • Dash to Reset Attack Cooldown: Your primary attack does four slashes followed by a short pause and then four slashes again. You can eliminate this pause by dashing right after the fourth slash.
  • Dash to Feral Leap into Ultimate: You can use this combo when you have your ultimate to deal loads of damage and possibly end with a kill.

Wolverine Defensive Strategies

As a Duelist, Wolverine exhibits an impressive ability to withstand damage, making him a tough character to defeat. With careful play, you can often survive an entire round without being eliminated as Wolverine.

Here are some tips to make you even harder to kill.

  • Increase the Feral Leap Distance with Cancel: Feral Leap has a distance of 5-6 m, but you can increase it by canceling it. Just do Undying Animal, and then a Dash at the peak of your Feral Leap jump. This way, you will travel about 10-12m. This little combo can be really handy when you need to escape.
  • Don’t Take on Multiple Opponents At Once: While Wolverine looks like a character that can’t take on the entire team alone, he isn’t. He doesn’t have a lot of AOE attacks, so your best bet is to take solo fights. As Wolverine, you should be mainly targeting tanks and displacing them with your Feral Leap.
  • Escape When You Get Regenerative Healing Factor: Your passive grants you extra HP when you reach zero, essentially being another life. However, it goes on a long cooldown before you can use it again. It is basically a sign to step away from the fight and heal up. Don’t take the extra life as a sign to be more aggressive.

Wolverine’s Team-Up Ability

Ability Heroes Required Description
Fastball Special Hulk Hulk throws Wolverine forward, launching him a long distance, great for surprising enemies or quickly getting across the map, plus you can deal massive damage to enemies in your path.

As a gamer controlling the indomitable Wolverine, I’ve got an exclusive power that teams me up with the colossal Hulk for earth-shattering combos. These moves not only amplify my versatility but also enable me to synchronize attacks with my comrades, flipping the script on even the toughest battles.

Wolverine Counters and How to Deal With Them

As a melee combatant, Wolverine’s main vulnerability lies in the need to get very close to inflict any harm; unfortunately, this leaves him exposed if an opponent employs ranged attacks effectively. However, his decent mobility provides some advantage in closing the distance, making it challenging for strategic long-range players to exploit him easily.

Encountering characters such as Hawkeye, The Punisher, Winter Soldier, and Black Widow in a duel could pose significant risks if you fail to narrow the gap between you. Managing these threats effectively involves simply bridging the distance and landing your series of attacks.

In essence, Wolverine is primarily designed as a “tank-busting” character. As a rule of thumb, opt for engaging in duels only when there’s a favorable opening or situation. Generally, it’s best to focus on your tank role and defend the objective.

Despite being built for the purpose of destroying tanks, Peni Parker and Doctor Strange will pose a significant challenge to him due to their long-range attack capabilities.

Both tanks have long-range attacking capabilities and are hard to counter, while Doctor Strange can soar through the air and float, compared to Peni Parker who can simply disable you with a click of her button.

When it comes to healers like Luna Snow and Mantis, I’ve found that their crowd control abilities can be quite challenging. It’s essential to exercise caution when focusing on them, as they play a crucial role in keeping their team alive. Typically, it’s not my role to engage with the healer directly. Instead, I focus on disrupting their support and making strategic moves to help my own team come out on top.

Best Team Comps With Wolverine

To create an optimal team setup, consider combining Wolverine with a melee fighter and a ranged duelist. From there, feel free to customize the remaining members of your team according to your preference. You could opt for two support characters (healers), one tank character, or even a combination of one tank and two tank characters.

In terms of ranged combat, it’s beneficial to team up with The Punisher, Namor, and Hela. On the other hand, if you’re looking for allies in close-quarter fights, Magik, Black Panther, and Iron Fist would be ideal partners.

Tanks benefit significantly from the presence of Hulk and Magneto in a team. These characters excel at protecting their allies, thereby enhancing the durability and resilience of a character like Wolverine.

Healers have a wide range of options to choose from, but at the moment, Luna Snow, Mantis, and Adam Warlock are top-tier choices, making them excellent selections in most situations.
