How to Research Items in Heartopia

In Heartopia, the game focuses on gradual advancement, imaginative building, and learning new mechanics as you gain experience. A major achievement in the mid-to-late game is unlocking the Research Lab, which fundamentally alters how you use items. This unlocks exciting features like trampolines and roller coasters. Keep reading to find out how to easily unlock Research Labs and start researching items in Heartopia.

How to Unlock the Research Lab in Heartopia

The Research Lab becomes available once you reach DG Member Level 27. When you reach this level, you’ll receive a notification about the new feature. Mayor Atara will then contact you to introduce the Research Lab and explain how it works.

Reaching DG Member Level 27 unlocks the Research Lab and gives you even more benefits! You’ll get more space in your warehouse, tickets to improve your hobbies, and new recipes for furniture.

Where to Find the Research Lab in Heartopia

After you unlock it, the Research Lab will always be accessible in the town center. You can find it in Central Square near the whale fountain – it’s located directly across from the pet shop, close to Dorothy’s Clothing store. Look for the rainbow and star design above the entrance, it’s easy to find!

The Research Lab is divided into three core components that work together.

  • The first is the Central Console, which acts as the control center for your research progress. Its level determines which items you are allowed to research and how many research devices you can eventually use at once. At Research Level 1, you need 400 Research Energy to level up to Research Level 2.
  • The second is the Research Device, where items are actively researched in real-world time. There are five device levels, each increasing research speed by a percentage. As your Central Console level increases, you also unlock additional Research Device slots. Eventually, you can run multiple research projects at the same time, but early on, you will only have one active research slot.
  • The third is the Research Store, where completed research unlocks items you can purchase for your home.

This building is the hub for all research activities – from launching new projects and improving equipment, to processing final products.

How to Research Items in Heartopia

You can investigate items using the Research Device in the lab. It lets you see a list of research projects you can start, based on your current progress in the game. Starting a research project costs in-game gold, and each project takes a certain amount of time to finish.

In the first research tier, all projects only need gold to complete – no other resources are required. Research times vary, from eight hours for quicker items to two full days for more complex ones. Once research is finished, the item immediately becomes available in the Research Store, and you’ll instantly gain the research energy reward.

Once research begins, it cannot be canceled or refunded.

Okay, so the Research Lab isn’t about speed – it’s a marathon, not a sprint! If you try to rush things, you’ll burn through your gold and Wishing Stars super fast. Honestly, the really cool stuff doesn’t even unlock until you get to Research Level 3. That’s when things get fun – you can start working on things like switch springboards, metronomes, and even the very first pieces for building a roller coaster! It’s so worth taking your time and building up to that level.

How to Use the Research Store in Heartopia

Just because you’ve researched an item doesn’t mean you automatically get it! Research simply lets you purchase it from the Research Store using Wishing Stars. This store has a limit on how much you can buy each week, and it gets new items every Saturday at 6:00 AM. Prices also reset on Saturdays, so it’s a good idea to check back often to get the best deals and save your stars.

Researching items can be costly, with some requiring a significant number of resources. Therefore, it’s best to carefully consider what you research instead of trying to unlock everything immediately.
