How to Save Josh in Until Dawn

How to Save Josh in Until Dawn

As a seasoned survivor of Blackwood Mountain and a devoted fan of the Until Dawn franchise, I can wholeheartedly say that the remake has truly outdone itself with the new ending for Josh. The original game left much to be desired in terms of a satisfying conclusion for this character, but Ballistic Moon has gracefully addressed that issue and given us fans something to cheer about!

In the game “Until Dawn“, the decisions you make play a crucial role in determining whether all eight characters survive their night on Blackwood Mountain. The remake of this game features an additional, highly-praised ending for the character Josh, known as the “optimal ending.

Originally, you could prevent Josh from being killed by enemies pursuing the group of friends, yet his ultimate destiny wasn’t something fans found pleasing either. Essentially, a happy ending for him seemed impossible. However, Ballistic Moon opted to alter that possibility in the Remake if you make suitable decisions throughout the story.

How to Save Josh

How to Save Josh in Until Dawn

In the original game Until Dawn, you were presented with two bleak choices. One was to abandon Josh, leading to Hannah crushing his head, or leaving him in the mines where he would eventually succumb to the desperation of his situation and consume the body of the Stranger (Flame-Thrower Guy), transforming into a Wendigo like his sister. Over time, fans have expressed a desire for an alternative path that might allow for Josh’s survival.

At last, I can experience this remake, and it’s simply incredible! Both original endings are still there, but the outcome depends on your decisions throughout the game. If you wish to prevent Josh from meeting a tragic fate or transforming into a Wendigo, then showing some regret for his actions is crucial.

When it’s unmasked that Josh is the Tormentor who’s been troubling his companions, it will also become clear that he is the one who’s been experiencing hallucinations and conversing with Dr. Hill. In this particular scene, when the doctor inquires “Why did you harm them?”, it’s important to answer with “They harmed me.” Later, when the therapist scolds him for his actions, it’s appropriate to respond with “I’m so sorry” when given the next opportunity to speak.

As I delve deeper into the mines alongside Mike and Sam, the second essential task is locating Hannah’s personal journal. When we reach the point where you’ll need to swim through the water and navigate your way out to find Josh, veer left before moving forward any further in the storyline. Keep an eye out for a large water wheel as your reference point here, since the ledge just prior to passing it can be scaled. There’s a tiny platform up there where you can climb, and right ahead on that platform lies Hannah’s diary she used to jot down her thoughts.

After I finish reading the diary, I’ll share the details with Josh as soon as Mike and I locate him. That way, if we encounter any trouble like Hannah grabbing Josh while we’re trying to escape the mine together, she’d likely recognize him, sparing his life.

Previously, if I wanted to offer Josh a chance, I’d have to navigate through those steps, but eventually, he’d transform into a Wendigo. Now, it seems like Josh manages to break free from the mines at the game’s end. The story kicks off with a beam of light – presumably the cops interrogating our group – illuminating a mine door. There’s the lifeless body of a stranger hanging, and the scene concludes with Josh patiently waiting for his rescue and redemption.

In the revised version, due to his regret for harming his friends during counseling, and because Hannah spared him instead of killing him, he avoids consuming the stranger’s corpse and transforming into a Wendigo. This is how the story concludes differently from the original Until Dawn.
