By becoming part of the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered, players seek the excitement of being top-notch thieves. Unlike other factions, the Thieves Guild operates more autonomously. When you join this secretive group, there won’t be a simple sequence of quests to follow. Instead, you’ll need to demonstrate your prowess to earn access to exclusive missions.
In Oblivion Remastered, completing the initial mission of the Thieves Guild, titled “Untaxing the Poor,” has specific prerequisites. This task involves a challenging infiltration of the Imperial City’s guard barracks to obtain some valuable tax records. Here’s a guide on how to successfully accomplish this mission as part of the Thieves Guild.
How to Get the Untaxing the Poor Quest in Oblivion Remastered
Once you become a member of the Thieves Guild, your task is to establish yourself as an adept thief by successfully pilfering goods and selling them to designated merchants. To obtain the Untaxing the Poor quest from the Thieves Guild, players should ensure they’ve sold items worth 50 Gold pieces, followed by a conversation with Armand Christophe.
To make a quick profit by stealing and selling jewelry, enter the Red Diamond Jewelry store late at night using lockpicking skills. Once inside, carefully take the valuable items from the display cases. After gathering all your stolen goods, travel to Olav’s Tap & Tack in Bruma and meet Ongar the World-Weary, a fence for the Thieves Guild. Sell him at least 50 Gold’s worth of jewelry. Finally, return to Armand Christophe in the Waterfront District of the Imperial City after midnight and choose the “Thieves Guild Special Jobs” dialogue option to unlock more opportunities.
How to Successfully Steal the Tax Records in Oblivion Remastered
Once Armand offers the job, players embark on the “Untaxing the Poor” mission, which is their initial task within the Thieves Guild aimed at boosting their guild standing. The objective is to pilfer Hieronymus Lex’s tax records. To start, they should make their way into the South Watchtower located in the Arboretum of the Imperial City, but beware, it’s heavily guarded. Some guards may be preoccupied eating, strolling, or sleeping in their quarters, and your mission is to sneak past them unnoticed and reach Hieronymus Lex’s chambers.
To gain access to Hieronymus Lex’s quarters and obtain his tax records, it would be most convenient to visit during specific hours: between 9 AM to 11 PM or 9 PM to 11 PM. During these times, the ground floor of the South Watchtower will be vacant, providing an opportunity for players to sneak upstairs. Once there, they should make their way towards the west corners of the room and climb the ladders until they reach Hieronymus Lex’s office.
To bypass guards stealthily, consider taking off your armor, particularly your heavy boots. Heavier footwear tends to produce more noise, so it’s best to remove them before attempting to sneak. Once you’ve successfully reached the top of the South Watchtower, look to your right to discover a locked desk that can be unlocked. This desk contains the Waterfront Tax Records. After acquiring this item, make your way back out through the entrance and return to Armand at midnight, as usual.
Completing Untaxing the Poor provides players with the Footpad Rank and 2 Infamy Points.
