How to Solve All Kitsune Quest Puzzles in Ghost of Yotei

The Kitsune is a tricky, clever character, and a master of creating puzzles and traps. In Ghost of Yotei, the Kitsune will do everything it can to stop Atsu’s progress, meaning players need to be smarter and figure out how the puzzles in the Teshio Region work. These puzzles involve fox statues and a cipher. Throughout the entire Kitsune questline in Ghost of Yotei, players will encounter numerous fox statue puzzles, so we’ve gathered them all in one place to help you solve them and continue Atsu’s journey to confront the Yotei Six.

How to Translate the Kitsune Cipher in Ghost of Yotei

Let’s begin by explaining what the cipher is and how to use it to solve the upcoming puzzles. You’ll receive the cipher by completing the Kitsune main quest in the northern part of Teshio Ridge. After that, understanding how these puzzles function will be crucial. When you encounter a fox puzzle, you can access the cipher anytime by swiping Right on the Touch Pad. Here’s a simple explanation of how it works: If a reclining fox statue displays a square symbol, rotate that statue so it faces left. This same principle applies to all symbols and their corresponding fox statues. However, be careful! The symbol consisting of lines (representing death) indicates that you should not interact with that statue, as doing so will trigger a deadly trap.

Below is a rundown of every Kitsune puzzle to help you progress once you get the cipher!

How to Enter the Nine Tails Hideout in Ghost of Yotei

The initial Kitsune puzzle features a locked door guarded by two fox statues that seem to be howling. To solve it, players need to grab a flaming torch from a nearby fire pit and light the two braziers that each have a fox statue on top. If you happen to light the wrong statues, just interact with them using the R2 button to extinguish the flames. Once you’ve done that, the path forward will open.

How to Solve the Find a Way Forward Puzzle in Ghost of Yotei

As you progress up the mountain, you’ll encounter enemies, and eventually reach a puzzle featuring the nine-tailed foxes. You’ll notice that two statues are missing from the gate. To solve it, simply find the two statues and position them correctly. Place the statue of the fox with its right paw raised on the left pedestal, and the statue of the fox with its left paw raised on the right pedestal.

How to Solve the Upper Building Puzzle in Ghost of Yotei

Once you have the cipher and leave the building through the fox statue to the left of the main entrance, you’ll encounter a new puzzle. This one involves four fox statues that need to be moved. The correct order to move them, from left to right:

  • Facing right
  • Facing forward
  • Facing backward
  • Facing left

Completing this action will lower the ladder, giving you access to the upper level of the building. There, you’ll find some fantastic new Shinobi armor. You can now proceed with your quest without much interruption until you reach the Dye House later on.

How to Solve the Black Dye House Puzzle in Ghost of Yotei

Go inside the Black Dye House. You’ll see fox statues on the left side of the room. Take the statue with its right paw lifted and put it on the right podium to secure it. With that statue in place, turn the right wooden board until the arrow points to the right. Next, pick up the other fox statue – the one with its left paw raised – and place it on the left podium to lock it down. Once the left wooden board is lowered, rotate the symbol so the arrow faces left. If you do this correctly, the middle wooden board will open, revealing a ladder. This ladder leads to a basement area and a secret hideout where you can continue with the quest.

How to Solve the Get Into the Building Puzzle in Ghost of Yotei

After going through the caverns past the Black Dye House and freeing the prisoners, you’ll find yourself in a hideout swarming with shinobi. In this area, you’ll need to battle through enemies. Along the way, you’ll notice various fox statues displayed in different positions, each with a symbol painted behind it. If you’re only interested in solving the puzzle, go straight to the central building – it’s the one illuminated by lamps and has four foxes in front. It’s crucial that you don’t interact with the fox statue on the back left, as it’s marked with a symbol of death and will cause more enemies to appear. Here’s the order for the foxes:

  • The front left fox (right paw raised fox) must be facing the right
  • The front right fox (lying down fox) must be facing the right
  • The back right fox (stalking fox) must be facing the left
  • The back left fox doesn’t matter, so keep it facing forward

How to Solve the Pedestal Under the Tree Puzzle in Ghost of Yotei

Okay, so I was exploring the forests with Oyuki, and I came across this cool little area – a pedestal under a tree with three fox statues! It’s a puzzle, and honestly, it took me a minute. You need to find a torch in this lit pit nearby, and then use it to light three braziers. But here’s the trick: you have to light the braziers that match the fox statues! So you’re looking for a brazier that has:

  • lying down fox
  • sitting fox
  • lying down fox

How to Solve the Find a Way Into the Forest Puzzle in Ghost of Yotei

As you progress through the quest, you’ll reach the forest and discover three fox statues. The symbols needed for each statue are located nearby – to the left, right, and under the bridge. Let’s clearly show you where to find them:

  • The left fox (lying down) must be facing the right
  • The middle fox (sitting) must be facing backwards, looking away
  • The right fox (right paw raised) must be facing the left

Once I solved that puzzle, I found myself walking down a snowy path, but it was full of traps, so I had to be careful! The hint for which way to go was actually on the fox statue. Luckily, I figured out a shortcut to avoid a nasty death pit – I just went right of the statue and then left of the next rock. It was a tight squeeze, but it worked! You can find a helpful guide if you get stuck.

How to Solve the Venture Further Into the Forest Puzzle in Ghost of Yotei

The last Kitsune puzzle features a locked gate and two fox statues you can find nearby. This puzzle is easier than the others: take the fox statue with its right paw lifted and put it on the left pedestal, then take the fox statue with its left paw raised and place it on the right pedestal. This will unlock the final door.
