In the game NieR: Automata, the primary narrative is divided across three separate gameplay sessions. The initial two sessions share some common elements, but the final session underscores that there’s still much more of the story to uncover even after the ending screen appears for the first time.
As a gamer diving into this epic adventure, you’ll find yourself tackling three primary storylines that need wrapping up. However, the number of endings you can uncover is impressive, ranging from well-developed to more subtle ones. Some of these endings might require you to assume a certain character and perform specific actions. Here’s how you can switch between the three playable characters in the game:
1. Character A: You can start with this hero right from the beginning.
2. Character B: To access this character, you need to reach a certain point in Character A’s storyline.
3. Character C: This character becomes available later on in the game, after significant progress has been made with Characters A and B.
All Playable Characters In NieR: Automata
In the narrative of “NieR: Automata,” you’ll encounter characters like 2B, 9S, and A2. Among these, 2B and 9S are partners, and their storylines will dominate depending on your gameplay duration across multiple playthroughs. Each character offers a distinctive combat approach, ensuring that playing with different chips equipped doesn’t make the experience repetitive. Each of these characters can be controlled during gameplay, although switching between them might not always be simple.
How To Switch Characters In NieR: Automata

In your initial experience with the game, you don’t have the freedom to swap characters at will. Instead, the character you control changes for each play session.
- Playthrough 1 – 2B
- Playthrough 2 – 9S
- Playthrough 3 – 2B/9S/A2, switching between each character as the story dictates.
Upon selecting one of the game’s primary endings, you’ll gain access to Chapter Select mode, allowing you to pick and play as your preferred character. With Chapter Select mode, you can leap back into any of the 17 chapters of the game at your convenience. As you revisit these chapters, you’ll notice digits appearing on the right side of the screen that indicate the status of optional quests. Should a character possess any numbers during a particular chapter, you’ll have the option to replay that chapter from their perspective.
In certain later chapters and most of Playthrough 3, you’ll be restricted to playing specific chapters with particular characters, a rule that remains constant. However, by using the chapter select feature, you can switch characters whenever you want. The catch is, you’ll also need to adjust your story progression to any point where that character was playable during the main story. As long as you save before moving to another chapter, any progress made in chapter select mode will accumulate, enabling you to increase all three characters’ shared levels simultaneously on your way to max level.
