As a seasoned gamer with countless hours under my belt, I must say that The Forever Winter has caught my eye (and hands) like no other game in recent memory. The character customization feature is a breath of fresh air, allowing me to switch between various scavengers each time I load into a raid. Old Man was my first pick, but the Shaman and Scav Girl have quickly become my go-to characters for their unique skills and playstyles.
As soon as you begin the tutorial level in The Forever Winter, you find yourself inhabiting the twisted footwear of the elderly character known as Old Man. He’s the initial scavenger you’ll control in the game, but other options are available. Here’s a guide on how to change characters in The Forever Winter!
How to Change Your Character in The Forever Winter
In The Forever Winter, you’ve got the chance to modify your character when you’re exploring The Innards, but remember, not during a raid! To do this, simply press ‘ESC’ on your keyboard while in the hub area. This will open the game’s menu. Inside this menu, look for the “Character” tab where you’ll find a lineup of six scavenger portraits. Select one by clicking on it until their name is framed with a red box.
You might observe that, even though you’ve emphasized a specific character, the model doesn’t alter on its own. However, rest assured, the switch will take place when you re-enter the raid next time, so there’s no need to worry if it appears as though nothing has changed!

Do Characters Have Unique Skills in The Forever Winter?
Absolutely! Each character in this game has a distinct skill development path, which you can advance by acquiring rewards from raids and completing tasks for vendors. The abilities of these characters differ significantly, with many possessing combat expertise across a range of weapons such as rifles, submachine guns, grenade launchers, and light machine guns. Characters like Scav Girl and Bag Man, however, offer support skills, enabling them to carry more gear or run slightly faster than their counterparts, among other benefits.
