Duet Night Abyss offers a good selection of characters, and the best part is they’re all unlockable without spending money – the game no longer uses a gacha system. While you don’t need to pay, unlocking these characters still requires a significant time commitment and effort. This guide will walk you through the process, which is fairly straightforward once you understand it.
How to Get More Characters in Duet Night Abyss
Adding new characters to your team in the game takes a few steps. Even though the game explains how, some players find it confusing. Here’s a simple guide to unlocking playable characters:
- Get Secret Letter Clues.
- Use Secret Letter Clues to buy character-specific Secret Letters from the shop.
- Start a Covert Commission.
- Pick a character’s Secret Letter before starting the mission.
- Finish the Covert Commission.
- Choose Character Thought rewards at the end of a Covert Commission run.
- Collect 30 Thoughts to unlock a specific character on the Armoury screen.
How to Get Secret Letter Clues in Duet Night Abyss
The best way to earn Secret Letter Clues is by completing your Daily Commissions. You’ll receive 15 Clues each day, which is a good amount considering you only need 10 to purchase a single Secret Letter. However, Daily Commissions aren’t the only source – here are some other ways to get Clues:
- Completing side quests
- Opening chests
- Participating in events
- Completing achievements
Where to Get Secret Letters in Duet Night Abyss
You can find Secret Letters for most characters in the Covert Commissions tab of the Shop. For characters not listed there, you’ll need to complete Immersive Theater and Nocturnal Echoes – two challenging activities unlocked after finishing Duet Night Abyss.
Covert Commissions
Covert Commissions are special missions that let you unlock Secret Letters. You can find them in the Combat menu. These missions change every hour and play similarly to other missions you’ll find in activities like Duet Night Abyss. You can tackle them alone or team up with friends!
You’ll gain access to Covert Commissions relatively soon after starting the main story, similar to other key features in the game. Because of this, we highly suggest prioritizing the main questline for DNA before you spend a lot of time doing repetitive tasks.
After completing a Covert Commission, you can select one of three rewards, determined by the Secret Letter you picked. These rewards come in three levels: Gold (the best), Silver (medium), and Bronze (basic).
- Gold Tier rewards 10 Thoughts
- Silver Tier rewards 2 Thoughts
- Bronze Tier rewards Character EXP Materials
Unlocking New Characters
After gathering 30 Thoughts for a character, you can unlock them using Reminiscience. Go to the Armoury screen, hover over the character you collected Thoughts for, and click the button in the bottom-right corner. Any extra Thoughts you have can be used to unlock Intron bonuses, which function similarly to duplicate characters in many gacha games.
You can unlock certain characters just by playing the game, such as Outsider and Truffle & Filbert. At the game’s release, the following characters are available for free:
- Berenica
- Rebecca
- Margie
- Outsider
- Truffle & Filbert
- Daphne
- Lisbell
