Heartopia offers seven different hobbies, and this guide focuses on Fishing. We’ll cover everything you need to know to get started, including how to unlock the hobby, how to successfully catch fish using bait, and what you can do with your catch.

How to Unlock the Fishing Hobby in Heartopia

Find Vanya the Fishing Expert

In Heartopia, you can start Fishing once you reach Developer Level 2, making it the very first hobby you can unlock. You’ll reach this level naturally just by playing through the beginning of the game’s story. After meeting Annie and joining the D.G. guild to become a Level 1 Developer on your first day, simply go home and sleep.

As soon as you wake up, you’ll find mail and a new visitor at your door. This visitor is Vanya, a fishing expert from Heartopia. Vanya will talk about fishing and ask you to create a repair kit for his rod. Simply make the repair kit and give it to him to finish this request.

Once you’ve completed Vanya’s request, they’ll reward you with enough contribution points to reach Developer Level 2 and get a Hobby Expansion Ticket. Then, talk to Vanya again and give them the ticket to unlock the Fishing hobby.

How to Level Up the Fishing Hobby in Heartopia (& All Fishing Upgrades)

You can improve your Fishing skill within the Hobby app on your smartwatch. Just open the app and select the Fishing hobby to see its upgrade options. You’ll need to increase your Fishing Proficiency and use Hobby Upgrade Tickets to unlock these improvements, which will help you level up your skill.

  • Fish Quality improvements increase the chance of catching fish with more stars. Additionally, they will allow players to catch 4-star fish at Level 4 and 5-star fish at Level 6.
  • Fishing Rod Maintenance upgrades will increase the durability of your fishing rod.
  • Fish Playing Skill upgrades increase the durability of your fishing line, allowing you to reel in fish for longer without breaking the line.
  • Fish Playing Expert improvements give players a chance to catch a fish without needing to perform the fish-catching mini-game, up to 10%.

How to Catch Fish in Heartopia

To begin fishing, first tap the toolbox icon located in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then, tap the fishing rod to have your character equip it. Once you’ve done that, walk up to a body of water and look for fish – they’ll appear darker than the rest of the water, so they should be easy to see.

Okay, so once I spot a fish, I turn to face it with my fishing rod ready. Then I look for this white circle with a little flashing fish inside – that’s where my bobber is gonna land when I cast. The closer I can get that icon to the fish, the better! When I’m ready to cast, I just tap the fishing rod icon down in the corner, and hopefully, my bobber lands right in that circle.

Okay, so I’ve found that if I’m having trouble getting my bobber exactly where I want it, holding down on the fishing rod icon gives me way more precision. Once it feels right, I just release the icon to cast! It really helps get the bobber close to where the fish are.

You’ll know you’ve got a bite when the bobber goes under the water and an exclamation point appears on your screen. When that happens, press and hold the fishing rod icon in the bottom right corner to reel in the fish.

Okay, so when I get a fish on and the rod starts bending, the line will actually change colors – it goes from white to yellow, then red. The trick is, when it turns completely red, I need to let go of the rod for a really short time, like a second or two. Then, as soon as it goes back to white, I gotta start reeling again and keep that pressure on to pull the fish in!

In Heartopia, you can get bait by speaking with Vanya again after finishing the ‘Cat on the Roof’ quest. He’ll give you the recipe to make bait and 10 apples to get you started. Once you have the recipe, you can either craft your own bait or buy it from Vanya for 200 gold.

Using bait is easy! Just go to the edge of the water, open your inventory by tapping the backpack icon on your screen, select the bait, and then tap ‘chum’ to throw it into the water. This will attract a fish, and one will appear in front of you.

If you don’t want to collect gold, you can keep fish as pets instead, but you’ll need fish tanks. To add a fish to a tank, put the tank on the floor and stand beside it. Then, tap the fish icon that appears above the tank and choose which fish you want to add.

When I started playing, I got a free fish tank, which was awesome! I can also buy more tanks at Vanya’s Fishing Store. At first, they only had small and medium sizes, but once I leveled up my Fishing hobby to level 3, bigger tanks became available. It’s a cool way to expand my aquarium!
