How to Unlock Remote Trade in Pokemon GO

The long-awaited Remote Trade feature is now available in Pokémon GO! To make the most of it, players will need to level up their friendships with other trainers.

Discover everything you need to know about the new Remote Trade feature in Pokémon GO, including how to start using it, what advantages it offers, and the daily limit for trades.

Pokemon GO Remote Trade Feature Explained

In Pokémon GO, players can unlock Remote Trading by reaching the highest possible Friendship level with their friends – called ‘Forever Friends’. Reaching this new max level not only gives you XP, but also unlocks two special benefits for Trainers.

  • Players will instantly unlock a Remote Trade with their Forever Friend. This will count as their first Remote Trade and is expended upon use.
  • Interacting with each other (Party Play, Gifts, Raids, etc) will add more Friendship Points, which will grant rewards like XP, and additional Remote Trade charges.
  • Players can only have one Remote Trade available with each Forever Friend, and they should expend that trade before earning more Frienship Points, since they won’t be able to accumulate more.
  • Friendship Points are limited to one per day, per friend. But there are additional Friendship Points that can be earned by participating in Weekly Challenges.
  • Weekly challenges allow players to team up with up to three other Trainers from their Friend List, no matter where they are, to take on a group challenge each week. Players can earn rewards, including XP and additional friendship points.

To begin a Remote Trade in Pokémon GO, you first need to tag a Pokémon with a special marker. This makes the tagged Pokémon visible to all of your closest friends – those you’ve maxed out Friendship levels with. These friends can then request to trade with you remotely.

Players can choose up to three Pokémon from a list of Pokémon their friends have made available for trade. This list, similar to a ‘Wishlist’, is then sent back to the original trainer. The other trainer then selects three Pokémon from their own available list to respond with.

Finally, the system will ask if you want to proceed with the trade. If you confirm, the trade will go through, but you can cancel it at any time if you change your mind.

To mark the launch of this feature, a special Timed Research quest will be available for all players from December 15th at 10:00 AM to December 29th, 2025, at 8:00 PM in your local time. Completing the research will give you rewards, including

All Pokemon Banned From Remote Trades (Cannot Be Traded)

These Pokémon can’t be used in Remote Trades right now, so you won’t be able to trade them with friends at this time.

  • Pokemon caught in the last 30 days
  • Previously traded Pokemon
  • Shadow Pokemon
  • Mythical Pokemon
  • Pokemon defending Gyms or Power Spots
  • Pokemon currently set as a buddy
  • Actively Mega-Evolved Pokemon
  • Fused Pokemon
  • Crowned Sword Zacian and Crowned Shield Zamazenta
  • Pokemon placed at Pokemon Playgrounds

Keep these points in mind when you do a Remote Trade with friends. Also, if you and your friend have a Lucky status with each other, the Remote Trade will automatically count as a Lucky Trade. After that, you won’t be able to get another Lucky Trade with that same trainer.
