MIO: Memories in Orbit is a Metroidvania game heavily inspired by Hollow Knight. Like that game, you’ll need to explore to reveal the map and regularly return to a safe spot to update it. Be prepared to run back to bosses – if you lose, you’ll be sent to the last teleport point and have to make the journey back, possibly multiple times.
Therefore, making sure you unlock the map in MIO: Memories in Orbit is really important, because it will significantly help you explore the Ark.
How To Unlock The Map In MIO Memories in Orbit
To unlock the map in MIO: Memories in Orbit, you must give enough Nacre to Shii.
Starting from the first overlook, climb upwards. You’ll find Shii, looking unwell, beneath a large, spiny structure. When you walk near him, Shii will comment on how unusual it is to see a functioning robot. But, Mio needs to walk past him several times before she can begin giving him Nacre.
So, to get the map unlocked, I need to give Shii a good amount of Nacre. Like, if I give him 200, Mio can actually see the map through his eye – but there’s a catch, she has to be right next to him for it to work!
Continue giving Shii Nacre, aiming for around 150, until he says he has enough. This will trigger a cutscene where Shii revives. After that, the inactive prompt on Mio’s map will be replaced with a fully functional, live map, allowing you to explore the ship with map access.
The map doesn’t update on its own as you discover new places. You still need to bring Mio back to an overseer dock for the map to be updated.
In MIO: Memories in Orbit, unlocking the map will make it much easier to explore, so it’s a good idea to do that early on. To collect Nacre, the best strategy is to repeatedly travel between areas with enemies and then rest at an overseer point. Resting fully restores Mio’s health and also brings back all the enemies you’ve defeated, letting you farm them again.
You can also continue exploring without a map. It’s not essential for moving forward, and if you return to Shii, you should have collected enough Nacre to purchase it. However, this depends on successfully defeating enemies along the way without losing all your health, which can be challenging since you need to beat a boss to advance in the game.
