In Nioh 3, you can equip and switch between two different melee weapons during battles. However, the ability to use a second weapon isn’t immediately available. You’ll need to finish a specific quest first. This guide will quickly show you how to unlock the second weapon slot and how to switch between weapons during combat.

How to Unlock the Second Melee Weapon Slot in Nioh 3

In Nioh 3, players who finish the “Way of the Warrior: Adept” quest can unlock a second slot for melee weapons when playing as the Samurai. This quest is part of a training series, and you can start it by speaking with Yagyu Munenori, Takechiyo’s old teacher, in the Eternal Rift.

To begin the Way of the Warrior questline, players should visit a Shrine and open the Battle Scroll menu.

The ‘Way of the Warrior: Adept’ quest becomes available after players progress to the Heian era and defeat the boss Takeda Shingen. In this quest, Takechiyo will face off against Yagyu Munenori in a practice duel.

To beat him, you need to skillfully avoid his attacks while repeatedly attacking to break his defensive posture. Once his posture is broken, you can land a powerful blow that will take off a large chunk of his health. Keep doing this until you defeat the mini-boss and finish the Way of the Warrior: Adept quest in Nioh 3.

After you defeat Yagyu Munenori, you’ll finish the Way of the Warrior: Adept quest and receive the Samurai’s Locks, Great Tengu Blade, and Swordmaster’s Robe as rewards. When you open the equipment menu after completing the quest, you’ll be asked if you want to unlock an additional slot for melee weapons in Nioh 3.

If you have two close-combat weapons, you can quickly switch between them using RB/R1 + Down on the D-Pad with a controller, or by pressing Tab on the keyboard. This is especially helpful when fighting enemies with different weaknesses, as it lets you change weapons without constantly opening the equipment menu.
