Among all the moves in the game, Balatro’s Rewind Joker truly stands out with its eye-catching and awe-inspiring appearance. However, what really sets it apart is its functionality. Known as ‘Throwback’, this move is crucial for amassing higher scores due to its powerful impact.

Balatro’s runs are influenced by various elements: chips, Multiplier (Mult), additional multipliers (xMult), the type of hands you’re aiming for, and your jokers. With 150 jokers at your disposal, there’s a wealth of options, leading to diverse runs. Balatro is known for its versatility, and Throwback distinguishes itself among the many possibilities.

It would be beneficial for you to obtain Throwback sooner, as opposed to waiting. The good news is that acquiring it isn’t challenging at all.

What Does Throwback Joker Do in Balatro?

The Throwback Joker gets “X0.25 Mult for each Blind skipped this run” in Balatro.

The disadvantage lies in forgoing valuable store visits to spend your cash. This could mean missing out on exclusive Jokers and not acquiring necessary Vouchers and Packs. However, a significant amount of these items can still be obtained via Tags. Although you’ll have less freedom and choice since it depends on the Tags, the process is incredibly simple for leveling up Throwback and completing the rest of your gameplay.

How to Get Throwback Joker in Balatro

“Continue a run from the Main Menu” is the Joker unlock parameter for Throwback in Balatro.

Here’s a quick set of instructions if you don’t understand what this entails:

  1. Start a game of Balatro with any deck and difficulty modifiers.
  2. Get to the first Blind screen.
  3. Quit to the main menu.
  4. Continue your run.
  5. Doing so unlocks Throwback to use in the future!

Should You Get Throwback in Balatro?

The Throwback XMult card is simple to use and can be quickly enhanced, which makes it a versatile wildcard when no other options are available.

This Joker character is adjustable, allowing you to enhance the Joker’s abilities as you progress, making it easier to reach higher scores. It’s beneficial to have one or two adjustable Jokers in your deck, and I believe this feature makes Throwback a versatile choice. The extent of its multiplier effect is determined by the actual cards you draw and the bonus skips each Blind offers.

In each round, or ante, there are three types of bets: Small Blind, Big Blind, and what’s commonly known as the Ante Blind. You can’t skip the Ante Blind during any round. This gives you two chances in a round to avoid making a bet. The game doesn’t start with a Small Blind, so it skips the first blind bet. So, if by chance you receive a Small Blind from the dealer at the seventh shop (since the first one is skipped), and manage to reach the Ante Blind in the eighth round, that gives you 15 opportunities to multiply your Small Blind by 0.25. If everything goes as planned, this could result in a 4.75x multiplier for your Small Blind by the end of the game.

Allow me to propose an additional suggestion: Pair Throwback with Hieroglyph (-1 Ante, -1 hand each round) and Petroglyph (-1 Ante, -1 discard each round). Using these vouchers together in one round awards you an extra two Antes beyond the standard eight. This results in four more Blinds to bypass, which is equivalent to earning a full multiplier point value. In simpler terms, employing both items in a single game allows you to skip more blinds, thereby gaining a significant advantage.

Although Anaglyph Joker isn’t the best character in xMult, it’s certainly not the worst either. If you find that it doesn’t provide enough value or benefit from your purchases, I’d suggest selling it at the shop. However, if you’re into a Blind-skipping run with numerous tags, then Anaglyph Joker becomes extraordinary, making it a must-have – Anaglyph Deck.
